cheers mate i'll give my stick a good yank lol. I normally do repairs myself so is it an easy fix and anybody know part number for the rubber to fix my stick?
rite spent a 2 hours on it earlier and looks like the clutch plate was in wrrong, twats never put a marker on one side so with some luck it should be gd to mo
I got mine for $650 in the clubprotege.com group buy, when the pound wasn't a POS!
I think it involves welding the pin to the diff case, which shouldn't really do anything other than keep it in place. Not to be confused with filling an open diff with weld like a dodgy rwd 'differ'!
More than likely your box will just shred itself or crack the case in the event of a failure. So the box will be wrecked, but never heard of anyone wrecking anything else because of it.

I couldn't possibly opine in terms of durability and reliability, but in terms of ratios - at least attached to the ST170 engine itself - it's bloody awful.
I've not had experience driving an ST170, just got info through speaking to a few people on Passion Ford as I wondered if it would fit the MX. I was told to steer clear as it's crap. Especially those who have tuned their ST's above 200 bhp they reckon it the box last like 5 mins so they switch back to the 5 speed.
Crap ratios and reliability-free? Sounds like a winner :lol:
@6db554dd14=Mikey:
Is it a true 6 speed, by that I mean is 6th a true overdrive gear taller than 5th, cos I know most manufacturers when stuffing 6 speeds into their cars all they've done is make first shorter so 6th is just as tall as 5th in most other cars. Defeats the point IMO cos you want 6th to be tall for Mway cruising.
**No, it's all close-ratioed, and if you're not "in the zone", forget it. My dad owned both my MX-3 before I bought it from him and an ST170 less than 2 months later. He tried to buy the MX-3 back off me at that point.
His comments were "The MX-3 has less power, but it's just faster in the real world. And nicer to drive. You have to drive like a complete twat to get any performance out of [the ST170]"
He sold the ST170 after six weeks and got a Jaguar S-Type instead :lol:**
@6db554dd14=Mikey:
I would love it if the MX-3 had six gears, keep the current gear ratio's as they are but add a taller 6th to give us decent MPG on the motorways but keep the acceleration from our short gears.
**Indeed. I note the V6 can pull quite happily at 1krpm in 5th, so it shouldn't have any problem chugging up from 75mph in a 6th.
I had a Mondeo ST220 for about a year. The 6th was wonderful. We got 36.0mpg on the trip trundling up the A1, from a 3 litre V6 :lol:**
@6db554dd14=Mikey:
Hey ho guess I'll have to put up with revving at 4+k at 70 mph. That's if I could keep at that, always find myself creeping up to 90 :oops: cos I love the way the K8 sings to me :lol:
I did sort of get carried away once and hit the rev limiter in 5th, I was enjoying the sound so much it slipped my mind….... honest officer :lol:
**I get an indicated 78mph at 4krpm, with a GPSed 74mph.
I also reached the rev limiter in 5th. For about 12 miles. An R33 Skyline GT-R passed me at about 135mph and I figured the police would see him first.
On the closed, private circuit at the back of Aston Martin's Gaydon factory that we both happened to be driving around at the time. Since that kind of thing would be illegal on the public road and I would never misbehave in such a manner.

I thought even the Manual gearboxes were Dexron II ATF fluid?
correct fluid is 3l of 75w-90w Gear Oil GL4/GL5
In Wes i have…Millers Oils CRX 75w90 NT Competition full synthetic transmission oil
I have the bronzoil on both of my cars… I noticed a difference when I first put them in compared to my worn out ones... of course I never tried the mazda OEM ones... All I know is that these are great! You could try the mazda ones and if you like them, done... if not at least you're not out too much...
Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the help and advice from the forum.
I just thought I'd update everyone on what's going on.
I took the motor out for a spin last night and everything was fine. No sign of a flashing "HOLD" light. This morning I drove into work and things were once again OK. The same thing this evening when I drove home. So now I'm hoping that the problem has corrected itself. It looks as though turning the engine off while the shift was in "D" and then shoving the shift lever into into "P", may have caused the "HOLD" light to start flashing when I restarted.
I have since checked around for lose wires and cable connectors but couldn't find anything.
Let's hope that that was it.
I'll follow up on your 'diagnostics' advice if the problem returns.
Regards
Paul
Oh work will be done :)
Anything that does not need to be bolted to the Engine will be removed and moved to the boot area.
Can ya link it whenever you get back from London please bud,
Ok, so I finally got round to making this vid to show people the problem.
As you can see, I have no calipers or discs on, so it's NOT a brake problem.
I've been told it could possibly be a diff bearing?
Anyone know how hard it is to replace one or how expensive it could be?
I'm pretty sure I have a gearbox problem…
P.S: Yes, it IS in neutral!!!
There's a topic on the us forum under FAQ somewhere about this issue. They just manufactured a bracket to keep the stick up.
Or you could just fit in a shortshifter.. :P
Hi Eddy, I had to do a clutch in my red one, I could hear a slight swoosh noise whenever I changed gear then it just went big time, that was the bearing. I ended up lifting the whole engine out and putting it back in a weekend, thats 2 people and about 18hrs work :cry:
Best thing is to go to a clutch center or try this guy in southampton

See my post above…
SAE 75w-90 (gl-4 or GL-5) or Dexron 2 ATF for all season protection
Under Manual Transmission Chiltons says ATF is ok for 1990-1992 vehicles, for all weather protection.
Just not needed in this country as its too warm.
I was almost correct….
This is what Barrywhite has brought which is ok for dragging and improved over open diff but it is only a budget design at end of day. It's fine as a daily driver and enthusiastic driving but put it against a true diff like Quaife or hexi and it wont compare.
Kinda like re moulds vs bugget vs semi slicks
You get what you pay for!
Yeah a couple of times ive had cause to remove one for a cv and its just cracked mate..then you have to wait until a new one arrives to fit its all time off the road aint it…best be prepared and fit new ones..
