hi guys prob a common topic, but im getting big clouds of blue smoke on start up which last around a minute an when it warm it sorta clears, but if give it a bit of stick an thee revs go up to around 4500rom it starts smoking again an then when on idle it starts smoking again,an i noticed that im getting black spots all over the back end from the back box, the car is running a filter an five inch can on the back.
an been told maybe lambda sensor is screwed,as it seems to be drinking fuel,20quid = bout 90-105 miles, this right? thanks mike

Stem seals ….
Blue smoke = oil
White smoke = water
Black smoke = unspent fuel / carbon
Stem seals are a small seal wrapped around the valve stem in the head these seals over time wear out causing oil that pools in the head to seep past the seals into the bore when you turn the engine off,.. So when you decide to go out and start the car you have a small amout of your engine oil in the bore and this is burnt off and exits as blue smoke also leaving deposits ...
In additoon due to the oil seeping into your bore and being burnt off its leaving a coating over your lambda sensor this in turn gives a false reading causing over fueling...Sounds to me you require a new set of stem seal fitted and a new lambda sensor....

agreed on the stem seals.

all depends on driving style really? I get about on average 140 miles out of 25quid each week, try keeping it under 3k rpm for a week see if it does any better?!

cheers guys, mite just look into buyin another head tbh,as know nowt bout stripping heads down an me bro to busy at work to help,
an as for driving style it dont really matter if drive like miss daisy or like wacky racers just seems to drink it no matter what lol,
once get pennys together will look into head swap, what wud be chances of 323f head fitting?

Mikey the sten seals are an easy fix fella a garage wont cost to much and the fueling issue will improve with a new lambda as i have said because the current one is prob fouled up with a coating of oil from the stem seal issue..

Thats fair enough mate. Are you after more power with this head swap idea then?

dunno foxy, they just seem more availible in breakers than a mx3, as i assumed they were 1.6 an 1.8 twin cams, just wondered if they fitted,an wud ya think it wud make much diffrence as i assume they ports an stuff are bigger on a 1.8

tbh mate I dont know . even if the 1.8 head would fit on the block, the manifold port spacing I think is different.
