Strange whirring noise
-
I've started noticing a strange whirring/whistling noise from my engine around 2.5k upwards. It sounds very similar to a small super charger. I'm not worried and I'm not complaining, just wondering if any other 4 cylinder owners have noticed it, or have the engine pixies been fettling with my engine whilst I've been sleeping?

mine dose when its warm sounds pretty cool i think, not sure what it is but its wasnt ther when i got the car

Is it not the variable length intake manifold? Mazda called it VICS on these engines IIRC.
Haven't driven my car for 3 months or that () but from memory it kicks in at around 3500 rpm.

I think you mean VRIS,,,
VARIBLE RESONANCE INDUCTION SYSTEM

Mine does it as well, it's the car taking the piss until you drop a supercharger on it.

VARIBLE RESONANCE INDUCTION SYSTEMNope, that's on the V6's.
It's a different thing altogether that's on the 4-cyl engine:

Mazda B6D, 3rd generation1,597 cc (1.597 L; 97.5 cu in) B6D - (78x83.6 mm) - The same strengthened and fuel-injected 16-valve DOHC B6 but with higher compression, no turbo, and the first Mazda engine to feature VICS (Variable Inertia Charge System). Most commonly found in the 1985-1988 Japanese market Familias, Etudes and Lasers, this engine was updated in 1989 with revised compression, heads and intake system (in a similar vein to the B5 DOHC) for the 1989-1991 Familia and Laser, then further refined for the 1991-1994 Mercury Capri and 1994-1996 2nd Generation Mazda MX-3 RS. The third generation B6D features an alloy cam cover, a VLIM (VICS) intake, had a 9:1 compression ratio and produced 107 hp (79 kW).

Ahh you speak of the 1.6 vics then ok…iirc
The Variable Inertia Charging System(VICS) system on any motor, not just Mazda motors, is essentially a separate series of butterfly valves and runners to adjust the length of the manifold to shorten it for low end torque and to lengthen it for high end torque in an attempt to get "The best of both worlds". On the mx-3 in particular the vics system is simply an open space on the intake manifold that is used to modify the vacuum of the manifold to increase or decrease pressure.

Sounds Like a Wheel Bearing to me.
usually cheaper to buy a hub from a scrapyard and swap it over.

Umm, it certainly isn't that, as the wheel bearings don't move (as far as I'm aware) when the car is in neutral and stationary.
It's a nice noise not a "Oh, somethings f**ked" noise if a supercharger sounds like a dodgey wheel bearing I won't be fitting one.
