Correct engine oil for 1.6 16V ?
-
Hi,
I'm looking for some info on engine oil for my 96 1.6 16 valve. I changed the oil and filter recently and I used castrol Magnatec 10w/40 semi synthetic. I decided to use this oil after going through the invoices from a mazda main agent that came with the car. They have used Magnatec 10w/40 for the last three services.
I have a feeling that this is not the correct grade of oil. Every now and then I get a ticking coming from the engine on a cold start up which I think is the hydraulic lifters. When I get this sound I turn the engine off Immediately then re start and the ticking has gone, engine sounds good.I have also heard the crank on one occasion and again I turned it off straight away then re started then no noises. I should point out that it doesn't always do this, most times it starts fine with no ticking.
I feel that the oil is too thick, I have had a similar problem in the past from a 2.0 Ford 16v Zetec engine after 10w/40 oil was used instead of 5w/30 which the 16v Ford should only be run on.This made the crank rattle on cold start up due to the oil being too thick. I'm not sure if this is the case with the Mazda 16 valve as I have not had much experience with Mazda engines.(I do remember someone telling me that the Ford Zetec was based on a Mazda engine but don't know if this is true ??)
I was in halfords yesterday and I looked on their oil chart for the MX3 recommendation and they say 5w/30 semi or fully synthetic so I could be right but want to make sure before changing the oil again.
Does anyone know what the correct grade of oil should be for the 1.6 ?
The car has only covered 52 000 miles and has been well serviced previously apart from the last owners who did around 12 000 miles without an oil change. The engine does sound sweet and runs very smoothly so I don't think it's worn out just yet, I hope !
Thanks,
Matt.

Mazda B6 engines are renowned for HLA noise. Regular oil change and some Wynns' HLA additive, if it's bothersome.

Hi matey, as far as i was aware 5w/30 or 10w/40 should both be fine, only difference is 5w/30 should warm up faster as its thinner.
Sorry that is my limited knowledge, i go for 10w/40 in my ze.

for my 1.6 i use millers oil 5w/30 and it runs well opie oils sell it at club discount

Yeah, the 1.6's do sound a little rattley on start up all the time mate as far as I can gather, mines the same, easy solution is to upgrade the backbox to something loud and obnoxious, that way you don't notice the bag of spanners up front ;)
I also uprated my HT leads and the engine fire up is much better and so is the pick up in acceleration :)

Thanks for the reply's chaps, Much appreciated.
I might change the oil for some 5w/30 semi synthetic then and see if that helps.I think it will but I wanted to make sure it would be ok to run it on thinner oil and see what everyone else is running their 1.6's on. I wouldn't want to end up having to find a new engine for it.

mine was on 10w/40 full synthetic and when i did a oil change i was told to use 5w/30 semi syn and it warms up quicker and runs smoother, i drag race my 1.6 and it is fine so im sticking to 5w/30 sami so dont worry about chanching lol :D

Thanks for that, It's always a worry changing the oil from one grade to another especially going thinner, I don't want to end up causing uneccessary engine damage through it.
Many thanks mate much appreciated.Does your motor go well up the drag strip ?

Doesn't sound too bad for the 1.6 motor and it does sound like good fun. I've seen drag strip action on youtube and on TV and other places but never seen any in the flesh.I have wanted to go to santa pod for a while now and have a look but never got round to it, I'm always doing something or got to go somewhere lol :D
