Info - Possible mods for the B6 engine

  • i found this on mx-3.com i thought it was worth putting it on here,

some engine mods that can be done to the B6 engines:

    1. intake- u can buy a intake off ebay cheap or make ur own. to make ur own like i did u need to get some 2.5"-3" piping made by exhaust shop or pvc piping will even work-i bought a honda civic intake from crappy tire. bought 2 extra couplers and 6 circular clamps. cut the civic intake by the battery with a coupler on the end of it. remove the coolant overflow bottle. cut the other piece of the intake so it ends right b4 the sub frame. coupler on that piece. then fasten the maf inside the coupler. and filter on the other side of the vaf, and the filter should be siting right over top of that hole that goes down beside the fender. now ull see 3 unused holes on the subframe. screw the overflow bottle into the hole, that the stock air boxes rear screw went in, with the original screw. now the overflow bottle should be between the intake piping and the battery. its secure there. now with that air intake duct on the rad support. remove it cut the end thats throwing air out on a angle towards ur filter, as this will also block some of the hot air from getting by ur filter. now ull notice that if u take off ur drivers front headlight, ur filter is set up perfectly to recieve all the air coming thu that hole, for the track. by using this intake u still get the look of an aftermarket shiney intake.pic below is without the elbow off the throttle body as i havent completed that part yet.

    2. exhaust- theres a header available at corksport, or u can use a probe 2.0l header and slightly modify it. high flow cat. a slightly bigger exhaust but not too big id recommend 2-21/4 into a high flow muffler or fart can.

    3. miata(mx5) 1.6l(b6) cams, stock or stg.1,2,3,etc. im pretty sure anything above stg.2 or 3 u need to upgrade ur valvetrain etc. when installing ur cams make sure u put the miatas intake cam, in the place of the mx3s exhaust cam and vice versa.

    4. standalone or a piggy back system- u do this so that u can get rid of that stock rev-limiter, in order to take advantage of shift in the powerband to the upper rpms.also has many other advantages and will be needed for boost.

    5. turbo- research forced induction forum for more in depth description. or read i think BOOST by corky bell(book is mentioned in the forum if this is incorrect). but with a 323GTX turbo manifold, 1stgen probe mx6 turbo, BOV, wastegate, intercooler and some custom piping, etc. you should be able to run 10-12 psi of boost safely,if not more.

    6. engine build-with building the bottom end you have many options, as any of the internals for the b6dohc miata will fit in the mx3s b6. u can with a higher compression set of pistons, balanced crank, and stronger rods.GTX rods are very cost effective and good for forced induction or N/A. there are pistons specifically for boost also or spray ur options are endless.

    7. lightweight flywheel/clutch- there are also options for this from stage1-3 clutches, and many miata lightweight flywheels. for more info on this search: miata flywheel/clutcth interchangability. stainless steel clutch lines are also available, that wont expand like the oem rubber lines.

8 ) head work- expensive for the benfits gained N/A, but a worthwhile forced induction mod. valve spring kits are also available along with heads using sodium filled valves(performance loss) but a boost in reliability for force induction-not a worthwhile mod in my opinion.

    1. engine grounds- clean off subframe and body where all of these are fastened with a wire brush or SOS pad. you can also replace all the ground wires too. there are also ground wire kits available:corksport.com

    2. timing- u cna advance or retard the timing depending on your mods, for more reliability, or performance. you can also purchase adjustable cam gears: corksport.com- for best performance reliability take the car in and have it dyno tuned at a performance shop.

    3. plugs and wires- id just upgrade the wires to performance wire set. for plugs u can use the stock plugs or search for the best plugs, as some can hinder ur performance.

    4. underdrive crank pulley- also available at corksport.com. this reduces the rotating mass of the engine/crank and slightly underdrives too. a worthwhile mod.

    5. motor mounts- there are also stiffer motor mounts available.

    6. hood spacers- just some standard spacers to raise the back of the hood allowing for the hot air to be able to circulate out of the engine bay. u can also remove the deadening there too to even more effeciently, remove the hot air.

  • HERES WHY you should do these mods or what your gain would be!
    @93034bac8d=irish-mx3:

    1. intake- allows air to flow quicker and travel more densely into the block

    2. exhaust- cork sport do sell headders but remember they are a US company and they will be selling for LHD cars i dont know if this affects the mx3 but i know we got headders for a RHD golf from the us and the steering rack was in the way!

    3. miata(mx5) 1.6l(b6) cams, EVERY pound shead off the cams and fly will allow you to go through the revs 10-15% quicker. (it dosn't actually add BHP or add to your speed.

    4. standalone or a piggy back system- you can programme and air fuel ratio, and also setup the car for the mods you have installed rather than using the ecu for the standard setup (as induction kit = more air, manifold & exhaut = exhaust fuels are released quicker so more air and more exhause leads to the fact you are able to get a biggert bang if you add mroe fuel!

    5. turbo- 1.6GTX should be well suited to the 1.5 and 1.6's and the VJ-13 & VJ-14 are great for the car there is a 16 too but the 13 can stan to 230bhp and the 14 to 260-300bhp

    6. engine build-with building the bottom end you have many options, as any of the internals for the b6dohc miata will fit in the mx3s b6. u can with a higher compression set of pistons, balanced crank, and stronger rods.GTX rods are very cost effective and good for forced induction or N/A. there are pistons specifically for boost also or spray ur options are endless.

    7. lightweight flywheel/clutch- in terms of fly and cams as iv said every paund off the weight lets you go throught the revs 10-15% quicker. Clutch PADDLE CLUTCHES ARE VERY HARD ON YOU FOR CITY DRIVING but they are really strong! and if your upgrading alot on your car i reccoment getting a 200LBS clutch its the low modified cars with less than 200lbs or torque and well worth it

8 ) head work- expensive for the benfits gained N/A, but a worthwhile forced induction mod. valve spring kits are also available along with heads using sodium filled valves(performance loss) but a boost in reliability for force induction-not a worthwhile mod in my opinion.

    1. engine grounds- a voltage stabiliser is good but in cars that are 1990 and around it wouldnt be a bad idea to change them

    2. timing- dont forget some mods can appear to give a missfire! which is easily ramidyied by adjusting the timing plugs spark

    3. plugs and wires- 8mm for 1.5 and 1.6 will be grand. but remember your leads are only as good as your plugs if you have top notch leads and chap plugs when the power ets to the plug its going to slow down!

    4. underdrive crank pulley- like i said weight off engine bla bla bla….

    5. motor mounts- get yourself an engine damper you will feel the increase through the gears!

    6. hood spacers- feck buying them! iv done i how to on fitting them on the site and it will cost no more than a pound!

  • and now to say im glad i have a B5 because
    it has more aggressive cams.
it the only under rated of the mx-3's (where as mmazda actually advertised it to be leess powerfull than it is)
all around disks gotta love them!

the fact iv got the si [RS]

iv a lighter headder & cams
    a LSD
and my personal favourite ITS FASTER THAN THE B6

hehehehe! sorry guys for that but UP THE 1.5 wooooo

  • you forgot the most important mod for the b6 guys!!!!.

its called a BP if u really wanna be just plain crazy and stick with the 4cyl get this engine the bp is a direct swap for the 1.6, u can find them on ebay.com for as little as $500 but word of warning !!!! ( make sure the engine u buy is the same year as ur ecu otherwise u have to buy a new ecu for it. also it can be upgraded via TURBO!!!!!!! If u guys havent seen a bpt in action i suggest u look on www.mx-3.com some of the BHP comming out of these BP's are stupidly high. Im talking 350+ but if u plan to turbo the bp u need to look into a few more mods. i,e protege transmission standalone ecu bigger fuel pump bigger injectors etc. all info on doing the bp swap is on mx-3.com and i have few friends on my msn who i was discussin with about the swap on my b6 b4 i bought k8. if u need anyhelp from these peopel feel free to ask and ill try hook u up. BTW the people im talking about are jarid and franko so they know there shit i also had JW motorpsorts as a friend but i got rid of yahoo :(

  • or you could stick with a b6 engine since it is the same engine as the miata and make some sick power with a lighter engine. i've seen 1.6L miatas and mx-3 pushing over 300 hp

a bp swap is great but look into miata parts and miata forums for some cheap and easy upgrades to your engines
