FORD PROBE 2.5 V6
-
UK market Probes are all OBD-I, without exception.
The issue with UK Probes, that doesnt effect other markets, is the addition of Temic 'chip in key' ECU's in 1995, to replace the earlier keyfob type.
The ECU is coded to the moby and is all but impossible to use in another application.
Later engines are the same, except for the later type TOT57171/271 type distributor, which only works with Temic type Probes, and a different oil sender switch.
So if an engine IS from a later Probe, you'd need the ECU from an earlier model and TOT57071/72 distributor to match it.

my mx3 is r-reg so am guessing its OBD2 but am running a KLZE that am also guessing will be OBD1
i've swapped over all the mx3 ancils & sensors onto the KLZE to match the mx3 loom
its running on the mx3's k8 ecu, runs a bit crazy tho

Tom Dean (tommyD) who used to be on this site lived near Cornwall. He had his KLZE dropped in at a garage near him, no idea who though.
Really it's a simple swap, like taking your k8 out and putting it back in again. Only differences are intake manifolds, the ecu/vaf stuff and exhaust.
@b205ea52ca=Roc:
No UK market Probes are OBD-II, only US models
Really?! so there are no 4 plug probe ECUs? That's good to know.
@b205ea52ca=Roc:
I know of nobody local who could do this swap though.
Really it's like replacing a blown engine. Any competent mechanic should be able to do it, however many won't want to because it seems like a bigger job than it is. Honestly the biggest thing I'd done before swapping mine was taking my intake manifold off.
Good advice there marco, me and my mate ended up doing it ourselves, as like you said, no mechanics would take it on, even my mate whos a mechanic, would not do it, but he did let us use his ramps :D
I do recall him saying he would run naked through the high street if the engine went straight in. He still has not done it :lol:

just found an engine will tht be enough??or is it better getting the whole car…........basically i can get an engine £250 or a whole probe £400
-
you will need all the ancilleries too dont forget, so it might work out cheaper getting the whole car, thats what i have been advised to do when i was considering it in the past.
-
If it's a 95 or higher as Roc said the ECU is useless. So really the only part you want is the engine.
I don't think you need most of the ancilleries Barry. The disty should be from whatever car you get the ECU out of. The alternator from the mx-3 will bolt right on. Power steering I've forgetten whether there's any incompatibility so that the only one I could think you'd need. But IIRC I used my mx-3 one.
-
Well you live and learn, i will store that information safely in my head. Im still learning myself but would like to help out where i can.
-
Yea man for sure, it's good to see some positive activity on the site. I only know this through actually doing it! Pity I can't remember it all right :lol:

First part of 95 is generally ok.

lol.cheers guys.found loads of step by step guides on how to do the swap….aint confident enough to tackle it myself tho plus i aint got the equipment.lol.are you guys gonna organise a big meet of anyfin??be good to see all the cars?
