ECU has died

    he said that ecu programming or reprogramming it is no big deal in terms of money but for 99% he said that I cannot use the used ecu from different mx3 in my car. I will need to get a new ecu.

    Did any of you replace their ecu with an ecu from another mx3 and programme it? I can get an used ecu from a scrappy for 50 euro or so but dont know if it would work. There is one on polish auction site for cheap and it is from 1997 model. Should I get it?

    ps my 1996 model has an immobiliser too



  • Why does he think it's the ECU, that's the last of the line of other things that are more likely.

  • He used the computer diagnostics tool and said he could not connect to my engine but for example he connected to my abs without a problem. hence he said it was ecu

    my car doesnt start, when i put my key to the ignition, the radio is on, all lights too, however when I want to start the engine, radio and all the lights are gone apart from the oil pressure light and battery light (two red lights on the right hand side), there is no sound at all, just one tick…that's it

    anyway another car mech is coming to have a look tomorrow, hopefully Rob will pop in too

    I've had 3 different ECUs in my black car, all of them worked. The important thing is to have the right OBD ECU. Count how many plugs there are on the back of the ECU:

    3 plugs (usually yellow) = OBDI so most 95 or younger will work
    4 plugs (usually grey) = OBDII 96 or later

    I know you say yours is 96 BUT it might have been sitting in the warehouse for a few years before being registered, therefore could be an earlier model.

    PS your mechanic is being a jackass or just doesn't have a clue.

    you may be right Marco in truth 1st time I saw the lad cause my 1st choice mechanic couldnt come, he'll come tomorrow and will post you update

    I won't mention the ecu to him just to see what his diagnosis is going to be

    There's always one! Someone must have stolen yours Rob and swapped the VIN plates :P Japan didn't actually have OBD at all apparently, so really yours shouldn't be if its an import?!

    but how do I locate ecu? I looked under the bonnet and could not find any of those plugs

    it is written on it: k 8628 egi

    and I can see one yellow plug, don't have tools to remove screws and see more

    if it is yellow, it means obd I, not II ?!



  • It's best to count the number of plugs, because I have an OBDI with grey sockets on the ECU! Always a bit of chance with these ECUs, but if it has 3 plugs get the OBDI ecu.



  • my 1st choice car mechanic came down to have a look, he said it must have been a starter motor, when i mentioned ecu he said it was not possible
    surprisingly he didn't use any electronic equipment to check the fault, he just had a wee look

    he is going to remove the starter motor tomorrow and regenerate it

    hope it will do

  • Rob came down and we jump started it so it must be a starter
    really weird with ecu diagnosis

    Mechanic: he is an alchemist, knows his stuff hence he will regenerate my starter motor or alternatively he can just soak it in a bowl of vodka:)
    the one and only starter motor with blood alcohol count :D



  • it was starter motor, got my car back on Saturday

    but my joy is gone already, bloody brakes stopped working in the morning, lucky I was 20km/h and managed to stop, i was pushing the braking pedal and it was going up instead of down

    they are working now but am heading to fastfit for brakes inspection

    my mx3 is crumbling :(

    ps my car mechanic also fixed the hand brake, could it have any negative impact on my braking pedal?
