Whirring noise

in 4th and 5th gear there is a whirring noise that comes from time to time, its not all the time though. sounds like an aeroplane.lol. any ideas?

Could be alot of things, what area of the car?

Well I only bought the car a few weeks ago but its definatly from the engine, and as its only in 4th and 5th gear I cant just pop the bonnet whilst driving down the motorway to have a gander! sounds like its coming from the gearbox but I want to avoid taking it apart until I know what it is…
