Removing the steering wheel

  • I am changing the steering wheel, but cannot get it off!

I have taken the big bolt off, and there doesn't seem to be anything else holding the wheel on, but it wont come off…Anyone able to help me out with this??

  • The centre of the steering wheel is on splines, it will be tight. I suggest you put the bolt back on three or four turns and give the steering wheel a few hard bangs round the edge with the palm of your hand. Give it a good old wriggle then pull like hell towards ya self.

The bolt you put back in a few turns will prevent the wheel coming off at such a rate that it smacks you in the face. If you want to you could spray a bit of WD40 round the splines and leave it soak a bit.

Good luck, i took mine of last week for the tracking it was tight as a crabs ass.

  • be careful.

I took my wheel off my beetle a number of years a go and lost a tooth and have 2 that are loose.

  • better get one of these … just in case

    hehehe

  • ^^ LOL thats good ^^

Have you had any luck with getting the wheel of yet theblackmoth ?

  • LOL Outlaw…

Cheers guys, I remember now, I almost nutted myself last time, even with the bolt still on! I've gotta get the boss off my old MX3 too, which is gonna be even harder!

I haven't done it yet no, went to oxford yesterday, so had to stick with the old steering wheel, but will def give it go tomorrow. The cars running really nice though, was a great drive to oxford and back, soooo good to have another mx3!!

Fitted my green airfilter and almost finished putting my speakers in.

one annoying thing is that the stereo in there is a Sony, but I want to put my Alpine one in...I thought it would be nice and simple, but sony and alpine both have different plugs in the back and I don't think a sony to alpine adaptor exists :( Think im gonna have to cut all the wires, which sucks, as your sound system is only as good as the weakest pa

  • haven't they both got an ISO connector? or a lead that goes to an ISO connector?

  • Problem is, the car is directly wired to a sony male connector, so if I could get a Sony female to ISO male adapter I would be sorted, but unfortunately they don't exist…

  • just make something up with some connectors and wire

  • arr, someones already cut the wires then, your best getting bullet connectors and crimps out

  • Been working on the car almost all day, did the wires with the crimps and got the speakers and tweeters fitted. I also took the back seats out of my old car and put them in the new one, as theyre a lot nicer.

I fitted the sub too and had a huge shock when my stereo started smoking whilst I was putting the wires through the car… Realised after that the live (which I had connected to the battery first) was touching the sub phono leads leading into the stereo!!! Smoke was bellowing out for about 30 seconds and somehow the stereo still works...Well, everything apart from the sup output, which i thought was quite impressive considering the amount of smoke that was pouring out!!!

I want to do the steering wheel next, but can't for the life of me get the bloody boss off my old car, so theres no point in taking the steering wheel off the new car till I've got the boss off... so bloody annoying!

Great advice mate, just had another go at getting the boss off and looks like the WD40 worked its magic, came off with a few hits of the mallet. Just WD40'd up the steering wheel of my new car and will rip that off in a minute :)

  • Sounding good. Im a little confused tho cos I've been away for a while (moving house, tiscali is a a bitch to get connected with) what happend to your original 3 :?

  • you aint been away that long?? it was caught in a flood

  • ahh now I remember. Doh! Lot of shit going on at the moment, cant visit "x" times a day like I used to due to new job

Did the wheel you removed have the airbag in it? I ask because I want to swap mine but its got the bag and I'm a bit worried about it going off in my face when I'm trying to take it off. I could do without a basketball to the head

  • If you dis-connect the battery and leave it for 15 minutes to allow the airbag triggers to dis-charge. Then remove it.

You may notice that the airbag light might stay on your dash if your air bag is not re-connected. Not 100% sure on MX3's. When the light is present it means there is a fault with your air bag system, and that your airbag will not even work (even in a crash)

Had a friend who removed it on their Scooby had a crash, injured them selves and the insurance did not pay out on personal injury due to the bag being removed.

Bad shit with your mate

The light wont be a problem as its in the steering wheel (a little led on the bottom left of the airbag bit) so thats gonna be gone

Thanks for the info on the battery disconnenction tho. Makes me a bit more sure that I'm not gonna get twatted in the head when I change it  Given my past history of breaking my car when I try and fit mods this can only be a good thing  oh well you live and learn…....... Anyone wanna do a "how to replace your steering wheel" post? pref with pictures  I'll do it when I do mine if no one else has but it might cut off in the middle with a picture of me headless
