LPG Conversion
-
hah well it's intrigued me. There's a guy in the states has been running it for a few years, and so far so good. Prices seem to come in at around £1600, so I guess justification depends on your annual mileage.
Performance doesn't seem too much loss 5% maybe, mainly at high end. But you could always flick to petrol if your having a rake about.
I wonder could you mix some nitrous oxide into the lpg?!
-
I do over 50 miles a day in my MX3, with Petrol over a pound a litre its getting costly (about 8 pound a day,) thats the only reason I considered the conversion i wanted to know if any one had one done on there MX3 as you lose about 5% performance and about 3% Fuel effiecentcy but as LPG is half the price of petrol its something im really considering.
-
well as I said there is a guy across the atlantic converted his mx, he's on mx-3.com forums - search lpg. Sounds like you would recoup your money in a year or two. Go for it and let me know how it is :P
-
£1600 where you getting that price from, I have just received two quotes and both are £1850ish plus VAT. So about £2173.75 INC. They say its high because its a V6.
-
that was an approx from a promo site about lpg… 2k+ is just taking the piss! That's alot of petrol! Think that's my consideration over... Should be government subsidised for all if they're so into this green bs. Clearly it's really about the money.
-
just got to say if you do convert it dont run on lpg for too long or it will burn your valves out its about one tank of petrol for about 3 or 4 tanks of lpg
-
im sorry to say this but it sounds like something my grandad would ask but on the other hand he woudnt buy a v6
-
Don't you dare LPG a mx3!
-
you will just have to ease off the pedal, and cruise at 60!
Thats what ive resorted too, watching people wizz past and go "mmm nice looking car "" as they burn past at a ton!!!lol

Because it's a V6? What a load of old cobblers cobbles! Cylinder numbers matter not a jot- 4,6 or V8, it's just the same as you're changing from petrol fuel induction to LPG induction through the same throttle body!
LPG is also 100 octane.
£1600 is a reasonable price around here. I know a guy in Scotland who will do it for that. I'm in Ayrshire.
It will take 45 tank loads, or 15,000 miles to get your money back though working on roughly 300 miles per tank which is what I used to get from mine. I don't have mine anymore sadly but am hoping to get another.
-
Also for all the guys who are saying t's a bad move then I agree to some extent-the tank in the back is a pain and takes up too much room and the expense of doing it. Beyond that then no.
In Australia where I grew up LPG is everywhere, all taxi's, fleet vehicles run on it and private cars can be bought LPG from new. We actually pioneered it's use and the process of delivering it to the engine was invented by an Aussie way back in 1974- thats how long we have been using it. It used to be a about a 1/4 of petrol prices but the petrol companies realised it was another cash cow. You all understand it's a bi-product from petrol right? Basically the gas that collects in the top of storage tanks so in that sense it's 'free' to the oil companies to produce. There is a guy on the mx-3 forum in Portugal who has had it done and swears by it. I'm on the celica uk forum - as thats what I run now, a 94 GT, and theres a GT that runs on gas too.
Yes you do lose a bit of power they say, originally they said 15% now it's 5%. I have driven cars on gas then switched to petrol- cant notice the difference.
After a year it's paid for- if you do higher miles, then you're on a real saving. Up until 2005 the goverment gave a 50% grant- took that away did'nt they.
My advice is do it if you are keeping the car. I would on mine but I want another MX3. I'll buy yours after you do the conversion!

Sorry but thats a fallacy, valve's in older cars yes but not on a modern jap engine. A good fitter will know if he has to change them for hardened valves which I do not believe you need to change on the MX V6's. Like I said - a good fitter will know.
LPG systems usually but not always run on petrol for the first few minutes at start up then switch over to gas- depends on the system. There are more high tech systems that do cost more with ecu trickery and doughnut tanks for instance so you dont get the ugly 44 gallon ooking thing in your boot
As I already posted here- all taxi's in Oz are LPG- they don't run petrol ever except perhaps at start up but I know there are systems that don't need petrol at start up. They do much more mileage than normal cars and lots of people buy them after theyre sold off- taxi's can only be 5 years old at most there.

I cant complain.. I dont know what convertion you guys use as far as liters..
I get 30 MILES per GALLON on my daili driven klze…
