So. Really. How hard can it be to get new shocks?
-
**So, I'm detecting a little understeer and floatyness on the front left.
"Now," thinks I, "would be a perfect opportunity to stick on those Apex springs and replace the shocks with some nice aftermarket goodness."
Can I find shocks for MX-3s? Can I buggery! All that I can find are OEM replacements. Not a sniff of Bilstein this, Koni that or Spax the other.
So, people who have put uprated shocks on their MX-3s… What did you use, and from where did your purchase them? And I'm not talking silly stuff like Koni inserts (when the instructions include "Cut..." as a first pointer, you can forget it) or coilovers at a bajillionty pounds. Just some uprated shocks that fit my piggin' car!**

**They look quite… Australian.
That and the fact they stock a total of 6 parts for the MX-3, none of which are shocks…
I'm mostly interested in what people here have done for shocks/dampers on their "project cars", as that seems to be the one department where there is a dearth of information. Surely not everyone who has lowered their car (beyond those who've chosen the expensive coilover route) has left it on stock shocks?**
-
I have used intrax lowering springs on both of my cars. On my fast car I used tokico blue shocks and on the slow car I used KYB gas shocks.
For the price I would go with KYB… not sure what's available on that side of the pond though...
-
Strut brace does alot for the mx3.

**They the ones from Corksport?
Worth it?**

Absolutely chuff all. Mind you, no-one even knows that the MX-3 exists over here.

Given that I already have a front one (standard fitment) and that I'm after uprated shocks to go with my lower springs, that's not terribly helpful news.
-
the KYB ones are on www.fordprobestore.co.uk in the mx3 section, £250 a pair. You can get tokico ones from ebay.com (USA) for about £400 deliverd over here.
hope this helps you ut a bit.

I would think he would be referring to the rear brace as most euro mx-3's come stock with the front brace…
I also highly recommend getting a rear strut tower brace! improves handling especially if you are lowering the car!

**Fair enough :D
On this one - my main car - I value my practicality, but I'll investigate the brace for the planned KLZE car.
jamesmx3 - Really helpful. Cheers! :D However, I note that those shocks specifically state "Exc ABS", and mine is an ABS-equipped model…**
-
yeah mine too, but its just missing a bracket for the extra brake line i think, i think you can get away with tieing(sp) it on with a jubilee clip or cable tie for your mot.
-
dont JB click your brake hose itll cut through it ive done this one mine and now have the joys of replacing the pipe

**My local spares store gave me a couple of other leads…
Apparently Bilstein make shocks for our cars, part numbers are VNE-4751 (O/S/F), VNE-4752 (N/S/F), VNE-4898 (O/S/R) and VNE-4899 (N/S/R), coming it at about £50 each from my source.
A search on the Bilstein site for those parts returns no model. Other sites return them as being for the MX-3 1.6.
Anyone know any more about them - are they V6 compatible?**
-
Compare this and this (search by part number).
I don't know about taxes but the price they quoted for shocks all round comes to £177.36ish including delivery to UK.Just thought it might help.
(I have no experience with this company, just what google turned up for me)
-
i would'nt fancy using 1.6 springs on a v6,
as they can take 220lbs more pressure on them before start shrinking.
-
dude there talking about shocks
-
front shock can take 200 more then..
think springs are same.
-
Bilstein do actually make a set for the mx3….. i found these thru demon tweeks..... following that front left light etc... u sure not bottom ball joint. as i thought my shock went. but was ball joint
