MY V6 doesn't start. Help please
-
Pull codes ! See the how to ;)
-
There is no spark at the spark plugs so I think it can only be the Dizzy, I can't find where the crankshaft sensor is to check that either. where abouts is it or is it part of the complicated Dizzy on a V6?
-
crankshaft sensor is bottom of the engine beside the big pulley down there. You can get it at it by taking off the splash guard on the driver side.

Thank you Marco,
I tried to get the codes but I didn't have an LED just a normal bulb and no flashes appeared.
I will try again to find the Crankshaft Sensor.

iirc it has to be an LED. unless the bulb you used was a 12v bulb then it would not flash. you can pick them up from any electrical store for about 50p. better to be safe and risk the 50p than not know :)
it doesnt sound like distributor failure as you have tried 3 in there, unless you have been really unlucky and bought 3 duff ones.
what actually happened before the problem happened.

I drove it for around 30 miles, parked it up for 2 hours came back then it didn't start. the AA man came and tested for a spark, there wasn't any. the cambelt isn't snapped. The AA man asked me to try again and it started drove 100yards and died wouldn't start again, so he towed me home.
The Dizzy i tried were off a V6 Probe and a 626. No joy.
I spoke to BBA who recon Dizzies and they told me that my particular model can be put on other compatible V6 but not the other way round. Just typical of my luck.
I need a TOT57271 Dizzy no other will work.
There is no crankshaft sensor on my V6 1.8 I had a local garage check it out & they couldn't find one.
So unless someone can send me a picture of where the crankshaft sensor is located on 1992 MX3 V6 1.8 I'm stuck without a car. :(

That photo shows the crank with the pulley removed. The red circle to the right highlights where the crank sensor detect the teeth on the crank pulley. The CAMshaft sensor is in the dizzy if that's what was confused for not being there. No crankshaft sensor is a no start scenario though, as the engine doesn't know the rpm relative to the crank position.
This is one removed:
I'll have a look and see if I've any dizzys that match that. It's more than likely your coil if your crankshaft sensor is in tact.

Hi Marco,
Thank you I got the number incorrect it is a TOT57071.
The scrapyard I got the other 2 from were very good they only charged me £25.00 and swapped them with no problem and then gave me my money back when I explained the problem with needing the 57071.
thank You
Sue

I did the LED test and got 4 flashes it was difficult to determine which were short and which were long, do you have any ideas what the relevant code could be?

here is the link for the codes. 4 short flashes indicates crankshaft position sensor

hope this helps you out :)

well you get a long flash to start, then you get your codes, then you get it repeating / the end.
So if it was
LONG
SHORT
SHORT
LONG repeat…which would be 2 crankshaft sensor
or as Dan says if you're excluding the long start flash in 4 camshaft pos sensor. This is inside the distributor. Different years have different ones as well.

Thank you, it looks like it could be either the Crankshaft sensor or the camshaft sensor in the Dizzy then.
As I have tried tried 2 different Dizzies I think it could be the crankshaft sensor.
I'll have to see if I can get one. Are they different depending on model year?

You prob know but you can't chop and change dizzys from mx6 or 626 probe etc. it has to be the same T number as your original.
