PCV Valves dont exist?
-
Ok, so my PCV valve is wasted, FPS has them but around 15quid, thought Id try the local motor factors so I could do it this weekend, Ive called APD, Yeovil Motor Factors, Camberly Motor Factors, Mazda Dealer, MX5 Heaven, Unipart and Express Motor Parts. Not one of them has ever heard of it, the bloke at Yeovil motor factors actually got a bit stroppy with me and told me it doesnt exist because hes never heard of it so I need to find a part number or find out what its actually called! WTF it was invented something like 50 years ago and probably all/most cars have them due to them being a enviroment thing. How can such a simple, small part be so impossible to find, itd be one thing not to have it in stock, or not able to get one for my car, but to never have heard of one?!

The problem with most places is they employ joe blogs who know nothing about cars unless a computer tells them what it is and where it goes and how to fix it.
Call the guy back, tell him its a positive crankcase ventilation valve, sometimes known as a variable-restriction valve that connects to the crankcase and is used to siphon the vapors from the crankcase into the intake manifold so they can be reburned in the engine. And also tell him he's an idiot :)

I did call YMF back after finding a part number, in hopes theyd find it and then feel stupid (think thats probably holding out hope for them actually thinking though) got put through to a different bloke though, he couldnt find the part number, then said hed never heard of it too, so gave it its full name, told him exactly what it does, how it operates and why its there, "you mean a crankcase breather" erm almost but no, I mean a PCV valve not just the tube. Gave up in the end, then called every motorfactors in somerset and dorset, nothing at all anywhere, although the taunton mazda dealer was better and while he didnt know what it was, he could get one for £23 and have it for me on tuesday, which I politely declined since I could get one just as fast for half the price from FPS, anyway, just been out and pulled it off, sprayed a shit load of electrical cleaning solvent into its guts, let it sit, drained, flush again, jiggle, suck blow suck blow all good, refitted to car, no more smoke.

i know how that feels, the amount of parts places I call and none of them see to know what the hell they are doing. Makes you wonder how they run a business.
Oh well that's a bonus then, saved yourself a few quid there! Sometimes all you need is a good ol clean out :)

yeah, id still like to replace it as it doesnt fully close which im not sure about as some are designed to flow both ways and some are not, however, it does close if i fake a backfire by blowing into it, which im thinking was the cause for huge oil consumption as if a backfire was getting through or atleast positive manifold pressure then it would be flinging oil out through the rocker cover air inlets, and there was evidence of that when I pulled off the pipe on the air intake.

dont ford probe store have them? although I suspect you want one now!
I have a spare one removed from my Mx3 when I replaced it with my newer one from my MX6…
-
could you try and blow and suck through it to see if it should stop the flow of air? the valve only closes on mine when i blow hard (dont even say it!)

Yes, Im well aware of that, it was mentioned once by yourself already, and clivvy, and by myself in my first and second posts, so calm yourselves, this isnt a classroom so stop trampling over one another to get a reply, I can hear you, im just choosing to ignore it since it offers me nothing I dont already know or havent already said.
Im not struggling to find one online, Im not even that fussed I cant get one within 50miles, Im more gobsmacked that all these profesional auto parts stores have never heard of such a device, youd think I was asking them to find me a centrifugal decompression unit, and yes its beautifully clever.

Thanks, will get one ordered at some point then as I can breathe freely through mine until I blow hard. Sure itll be fine in its current state for a few days, been broken for months Im guessing, its atleast moving now which is more than it was the other day.
