Smoke!

  • hello guys, i dont know why but as i pulled away today i decided to look in my rear view mirror. i saw alot of either very white or light blue smoke coming out the exhaust. I thought it was just when pulling away but noticed later that it is also when I coasted in gear (clutch disengaged) for a bit then put my foot back on the loud pedal it plooms out then as well and its proper thick smoke. it lingers around. i thought possible HGF but am not sure, it could be a fueling issue. I do have a slight loss of power but nothing too noticable really and mainly in the lower rev range.
any ideas would be appreciated. new plugs maybe?

engine was warmed up a long time before i noticed so its not because its cold

  • Blue is normally oil in the cylinders although if its quite white it could be a head gasket especially if its more as your accelerate

Blue on start up and then goes away is valve stem seals but if its while you are driving it could be rings going, if its quite white and a lot of it that is usually head gasket burning water or oil,
check you are not using a stack load of oil or water

if it is fuelling, check the plugs they may show up like one on the list, fuel problems are usually a dark smoke, get a tin of redex and stick the whole lot through too to try and clean injectors etc

  • checked the oil today and it is where i topped it up last week (or there abouts). cant say i have checked the water. not used to where it is, i think all my cars have had a seperate reservoir bowl lol. i guess i just put water in til it over flows?

  • its on the right hand side, just fill it exactly to the maximum line and watch it after a few days

  • on the left on mine i think :? will go check it now as its cooled down a bit.

  • wonder if oil catch can would help things and reduce oil vapours into engine.
They do spit a bit as they get older.

  • Doing a compresion test will tell you for sure if it is HG failure, or you can get a sniffer test done at a garage to see if there are exhaust fumes in your water tank.

  • well i just checked, water is full to the brim, oil is still the same. there is no oil in the water from what i can see (on the left when facing the engine).
what is oil catch what? lol

  • on your rocket cover there is a PCV valve, this has a breather pipe going to the inlet manifold. Oil vapours are pushed up this but as engine gets older it will push oil up the line increasing deposits on the engine internals. You can put a oil catch can in to catch this oil. DJmarco has one i think if you look at his project page, just ebay search oil catch and it will become clear. It will be £75-100 tho. So worth getting the above checked out first.

  • see the small pipe from the top of the engine into the induction pipe, you remove that and put a tank inline to catch oil that is sent into the inlet manifold

The V6 creates a small vacuum within the engine ( thats why it cuts out if you pull the dipstick while running ) and this helps pull oil up into the heads

The vapours in the oil are pulled out through into the engine and burnt off

The can catches the oil as it cools it stopping it from entering the engine

  • yeah i think i know what pipe you are on about. has a bung holding it into the rocker. mine is very loose. i pulled it out the other day by accident lol. yeah i remember that bit of bling he had under there lol, looked pretty good too

  • I also broke one of the vacuum pipes ( i think it is anyway) near the middle plug at the back of the engine when i was changing my leads. could this have anything to do with it ie loss of power etc

You need to make sure all of that has a good seal as that can cause bad running

ah crap, guess i need a new pcv valve the lol

  • All the vac pipes have to have a good seal, otherwise it WILL run poo!. Its probably over fueling hence smoke!, get on probestore.co.uk and get cracking!! :D

  • i actually snapped the plastic piece that the pipe attaches too though :? and its flush. am i able to get something (maybe a thin screwdriver or long nose pliers) to pull this out?

  • Can u put a pic on so we can see bud, i replaced the pcv on mine and the rubber gromit had gone hard and cracked so i replaced that too, it only cost about £15 on fordprobestore :D

  • yeah no probs, I am guessing that this is the valve, which as you all can see is very loose

and this is the vac pipe which i have now magically reattached

Still getting some hesitation even with it reattached but the smoke seems to have died down some.

  • anyone figured out a way to stop the over fueling besides getting a remap?

  • ok, i have figured out that my engine is only hesitating now when it is cold or first started. once it is warm it runs like a beauty but when cold it is really struggling to accelerate. any ideas? i thought it was the MAF but it wouldnt go away if that was th problem. when cold at about 4k i get a right kick in the back as it starts to use its full power (sometimes)

  • hold on a sec, you have an mx3 now?

    does your bac work?

sounds like a lean condition, which can be caused by a vacuum leak, manky air filter, bad throttle setup, bad/incorrect tps readings, low fuel line pressure (check fuel filter, pump and regulator) or a hang up in the VRIS sys as I believe that engages at 2.5k
