Opinions on spark plugs ????
-
Hey you guys,
its (yet ) another post from me!!!
not asking for help this time just opinions.
when my mx-3 comes back from having the water pump and cam belt changed i'm gonna get the spanners out
and give her a reet good servicing
i would like your opinions on spark plugs please.
i have for the last few years been using bosch super 4's in my cars
(1x bmw and 2x astra sri's)
i was going to use them again for the little mazda but have read that jap cars run better on denso or ngk plugs.
apparently the heat range is different between jap cars and plugs
and the european cars and plugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
this is news to me as i thought plugs were plugs.
does anyone know if there is any truth in this and also what spark plugs have you guys found to work best.
i'm running a standard 1.8 v6 set up ( at the moment  )
cheers

NGK all the way! Mazda chose them for a reason, that and the fact they serve me well is enough for me.
Tried iridium, didn't do much for me at all, developed a missfire instead.

Bosch super fours I use and they seem pretty good and never had problem

Denso and NGK are Japanese brands and in my opinion, suit japanese engines best. Any spark plug manufacturer will produce various fitments and heat ranges. I have been through the Chilton's manual and cannot find a specification - if only Haynes had done a manual, but then this forum would ask half the questions!
I will try to get the OE spec for UK heat range.

OK,
NGK BKR5E-11
(nippon)Denso K16PR-U11The 11 at the end is the heat range.
I would be happy with either, NGK seem to be cheaper most places, but only by pennies.
Good luck.

if only Haynes had done a manual
Was thinking about that only the other day, I pass the haynes workshop everyday on the way to work, shame mx3's are nearly twenty years old, would happily let them strip my car apart if it meant I could have a free manual for it!
-
i ran hks plugs for about 4-5 months and not a bother out of them,
before that it was super 8s
-
I ran NGK triple electrode plugs, worked really really well…
-
I use ones that work and aren't black on the tips.

I'd pay for the manual if they cleaned it and got it going

Fitted some NGK Iridium plugs this weekend, along with Kerr Nelson K1 leads, definately running better, it wasnt in anyway bad before, but now it feels so nice, not a hiccup, perfectly smooth idle, and all the way through the gears. As a side note, its well worth getting some quality leads, checked the resistances on the new K1's nothing above 5k ohms, checked the old leads, the shortest lead, which is about 10inches measured a whopping 7k ohms, lead #1 (the longest lead) measured a colossal 68k ohms!!!! and oddly lead #3 refused to provide any measurement at all, ran all the way upto 2million ohms and still couldnt get a reading, and I tried for several minutes! So for me this has been a fantastic upgrade, worth every penny, Im eager to see what my new fuel bill will be, as everyone knows leads and plugs wont give you any appreciable difference in power, but these have definately rejuvinated the engine and brought back a fair punch of power (not least due to a duff lead)

Those K1 leads do make a big difference, to make it even better now make a grounding kit to give the plugs a better spark

if my eyes dont decieve me isnt that a grounding kit already fitted ie the yellow wires…

LOL too many long days at work, didnt even notice that
I will rewrite that comment
Those K1 leads make a big difference, now to make it even better buy a KLZE :D

Is there anywhere I would benefit most from connecting the grounding kit to? Due to christmas delays the kit didnt turn up for a month so the seller sent me another, after christmas the both turned up within a week of each other, so Ive got another I can wire in to any areas Ive missed, theres a connector tab on the front right of the gearbox, just below where the air filter is, suspect that is for an earth, but theres no cable attached to it, plonk one on?
