Well, technically you can have them on the car, but you're not allowed to use them on the road!

Also, a friend of mine had one of those hinged plates (The faster you go the further it goes into the bumper, allowing more air flow) and got pulled over and almost fined for having it!

I would wire it to the ignition so it pops out when you start and pops in when you stop, surely thats fine

Yeah, should be! Until you don't realise it's jammed and you get pulled over! ;)

Would look good for stationary viewing! :)

Also, bear in mind, the lower your car, the less likely it'll fit underneath!
(Unless you mount it inside the bumper?)
