Fitting Cone air filter into a 1.6i
-
Appologies for the question, but you never know if you don't ask.
I've just brought an air filter cone, that'll do for now until I sort myself out a proper induction kit. Here is a photo from the net of what my 1.6i looks like:-
Upon looking at installing the filter today I saw a silver coloured block with some wires coming from it, it says air flow meter on it. The air filter I have won't install to this as its a flat face front on the meter, do I remove it totally and fit the cone to the pipe behind it? What should I do with the wires from the meter, once its taken off, if this is the case?
Thanks in advance for any help.

the air flow meter must stay on if its taken out it skrews up the fuel and air mixture and would run realy bad.with it been a sohc im not sure if you can fit a cone on but
what you can do is have a look at k&n pannel filters and paint the air box and put a good air feed to it and this would probably work better than an cone filter as the box keeps the heat out
im not sure if the dohc air flow meter would be ok but if it is you could use on of them then a cone filter would fit on them as they are round
have a look at nightstalkers and my work log as we both have 1.6 but they are dohc but give you an idea what you can do

Thanks for the info Jay, very much appreciated. Just checked out the K&n filter. Will also check out logs you mentioned.
Cheers

what are you plans for car?
ive just done some reasearch and it my be better to look into swaping the sohc for either the dohc or a bp engine there isnt much you can do with the sohc if anything
sorry its not possitive info
but if you dont wish to swap the engine we will help out as much as we can to help you.

:( I don't think I can do an induction kit due to my stupid air flow metre sensor pipe which makes ol' Bert stutter if it is removed

What other cars had the same SOHC engine in them?
Might be worth a look to see what Air Flow Meter and stuff they used?
It may be interchangable? you never know….
Didn't the 323 have that engine???
-
Must be possible just found these SOHC MX-3 pics:
Refered to as 'Custom Spectre Intakeand filter'.
-
Had to laugh at how this guy did it LOL
And he has it a different way here:
Just so you know why its covered in crap, he does offroad creak racing in it!

Done some research:
You need to fit a converter to the End of the Airflow Meter that will change it to a round end so you can fit a filter to it.

Aparently an RX7 flow meter?
I quote:
@4fe3fb5900:
But to any you 1.6 guys if you can get ahold of a 2nd gen rx7 MAF throw that on you'll love it.
Can't see what difference it would make myself????
But might be worth googling?

Would you not just save up a few quid and do a BP engine swap? From what I read on the mx-3.com forums when I was researching them you'd have a very easy time doing it, since your car has the SOHC engine & would be OBD1.
