Wheel refurb
-
my wheels are desperately in need of a refurb and colour change.
any ideas?
-
satin black look realy good look an may signiture
-
any diy advice would be much appreciated
-
and sandi wise should i go 400 grit or higher?
-
when i did my wheels they were cover in thick splatted paint so i use a 120 grit then a 240 grit but the wheels were in a mess you do need to leave it a rough surface so the under coat has got some thing to hold onto.
how bad are your wheels
i used rattle cans for mine if your going to as well this is what you will need
1 can of under coat
4 cans of paint
1 can of lacquer
some wet dry paper to sand between coats
masking tape and newspaperhere's a link to my work log to show before and after pic

awesome thanks jay, i was gonna get some primer from halfords that does the job of bonding but if a good rub down and normal primer will do it then thats better cause the hali's stuff is costly.
How long did it take to do all four?

Best thing for wheels is Nitromors…
Strips the paint right off in minutes!
Then just a clean up and primer is needed before the top coat!
-
If you get chunks or heavy curbing on the rims, just file it down a little so its down to scratches then a very thin layer of epoxy/polyester 2 pack filler (not p38) just to fill in the grooves left behind
-
take plenty of pics when you do it and then if you can do a how to guide to help anybody else who want to bo it
thanks and good luck

Be careful using paint stripper on any alloy surface, it can eat into it and corrode it severly.

Yeah I still got that stuff from doing wood doors, and it eats everythin, gonna get some grit paper and use elbow grease, will do as requested and put up a work log.

Never had a problem with any of the alloys I've refurbed using nitromors…

would suppose it would depend on how long its left on for, I want a quick solution so i can crack on and get em coloured, and i am not removing the tyres so it will be a masking and newspaper jobby :D
