this is what is says
back for good
after an unfortunate year that involved being made redundant and having to break my 2 year EK3 Civic track project, I've finally got back on my feet and returned to the jap scene with a bargain 1.6-liter Mazda MX-3 bought for less than 400 quid. I've started tidying it up and plan some big changes but have started to realize that the MX-3 is not recognized within the modifying scene unless you live in the States and have the V6 version. I am already at a bit of a loss with regards to sourcing engine and chassis parts, so i was hoping you'd be able to point me in the right direction
Phil WhiteleyFirst of all, welcome back! you've bought yourself a slightly different car to modify but the good news is that it is by no means impossible, though modifying it will require lateral thinking and some overseas purchase. You first port of call is should probanly be www.mx-3.com for its pool of information specific to this model. also the ford probe store here in the uk ( www.fordprobestore.co.uk ) has a special section dedicated to the mx3. From there the US eBay site ( www.ebay.com ) is a good source of chassis parts, though it would also be worth searching for coilovers under ford escort as this US model apparently shares the same suspension. Externally German company RPI Tuning ( www.rpi-tuning.de ) produces a reasonable selection of body kits and SSAutoChrome.com will help you dress up the engine bay. For breathing parts it may be best to adapt universal items or investigate parts for the 1.6 litre Mazda 323, which uses the same engine. But we'd recommend trying to source and fit the 1. litre v6 instead a simple swap as the wireing and mounting positions are said to be identical to your 1.6 litre Hope this helps

I thought the 1.6 - 1.8 v6 conversion is not easy, as you have to change the loom for starters, do you think they mean 1.8 - 2.5 conversion?

:D AWESOOOOOOMMMMMEEEEEEEEE Gonna get it today!

**Amongst myriad other issues.
Of course all the underbonnet stuff for the 1.6 is interchangeable with MX-5 components, only it's longitudinally mounted in the '5 and transverse in the '3 (that's a quick rule of thumb for FWD/RWD - tranny engine is usually FWD, longy engine is usually RWD), so space becomes horrific.
If I had a 1.6 MX-3, I'd be tempted to either source all the parts for a BBR conversion (start with a Garrett T25), as with the Mk1 MX-5 BBR Turbo and Le Mans (150hp/154lbft), or find a stacked 1.8 and an IHI VJ35 turbo as with the '04 Mazdaspeed Miata (178hp/166lbft). Neither would be as much work as trying to cram the MX-3 V6 in there, both would be about as expensive (MX-5 engines are a dime a dozen, but the turbo conversions would be nudging a grand without fitting, less if bought piecemeal) and generate more power and torque.
Problem is that I hate four-pot engines now. Not a problem in an MX-5, because you can't hear yourself think, much less the engine
(and yes, I know I have a four-pot Accord Type-R. I don't like it though)**
