ECU chipper

Remember US 91 RON is not the same as ours.
@8259e3446a:
However most European pumps deliver 95 (RON) as "regular", equivalent to 90–91 US
So when probinator says 91, that corresponds to similar octane rating as our 95. Probinator does run rich, but it's a decent enough chip, especially for the money. Don't let the US octane figure put you off anyway.

allrite ill get one off probinator then… what kinda difference can i expect ??
-
compared to a k8 ecu?
Alot! far better mileage, and far better performance! And a much cleaner exhaust! Clean your plugs when you change over, they're probably quite black.
Be sure to state your setup to probinator when ordering:
curved neck/ straight neck
JE50 VAF
mx-3 199X

Probinator chip is way better than K8 ECU
Smoother, faster, more refined, there is no comparison between the two.
It does require professional installation though, I found a local electronics company that installed it for £10.
You also need a specific ECU with the correct Eprom chip code.

Well professional or determined! A few things to note are that it is soldered both sides. I used a combination of a solder sucker and copper braid. I also found it very tricky with a standard soldering iron. I think that's when I cracked and bought a digital thermostat one from Maplin when it was half price. After that it was alot easier.
I think Jay knows about that, but it's explained here: How To:

the reply i got
Jay,
I am sorry but I do not have a solution for the K8 cars. The MX3 cars have so much variation in the wiring that what might work in one car -could possibly not work in another one. The only way you would know for sure if one of my computers would work is to try one of the interchangeable number ECUs to see if you car will run correctly with it. The numbers are: KL01, KL03, KL05, KL07, KL09, KL48, KL55 or KL59. If you can find one of these ECU numbers and try it in your car to see if your car will run then I can help you. But if your car will not run then I cannot help.
Sincerely,
Michael Perry,

my k8 ecu couldnt be chipped. Only thing i could do was have my kl36 chipped which would give a slight improvement in VRIS timing etc. Or get a KLDE ecu chipped which would be litle bit cheaper as the ze ecus are quite expensive to get hold of. ( well were back in the day mine cost £100 )
But if you want a k8 engine chipped then i dont know the answer? cant imgine there is much gain on a k8 engine.
-
i was under the impression that if i get a chippable k8 ecu that it could be chipped to run a klze as a 2.5
so now im thinking i have to get a ze ecu and get that chipped
IM CONFUSED !

Xtremethings guy sells ECUs for probes with KLZEs. He reckons it would take some adjusting to make it work in an mx-3. Which is odd because you can use a mx6/probe KL01 ecu+ VAF in Mx-3s with a KLDE.
Probinator sells chips what work in certain k8 ecus for a KLZE engine (that's what you want and what I used with my k8 ecu and KLZE).
Custom chipping/mapping a k8 ecu for a k8 engine will not do much.
-
Yeh Jay you have a klze right? The ECU you have, can have its chip removed and a probinator one put in its place, thats what i was gonna but but decided i cba right now
-
or since urs is before 1995 u could just get a kl31 or kl36 ecu and enjoy the full potential of the klze
-
find me one and ill get one :D
-
fair point they are as rare as rocking horse sh!t heh

Thats not correct, this is how it works:
The KL31 and KL36 ecu have the correct VRIS settings for the Straight Neck out of a MX-6. So if your ZE is a Straight Neck get a KL31 ecu preferably as the KL36 is out of an automatic.
If you have the Curved Neck ZE out of the Millenia then you need to find a K8 ECU that has an EPROM chip number where sthe second half of the number starts with a 2 not a 16. This is the only way to get the correct VRIS points for the curved neck manifold.
The probinator chip is only $45 about £35 including delivery to the uk from his website: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/728690/6
If you don't have the correct EPROM number just find a K8 ECU with the right number from a scrap yard (must be from a pre 1994 car) don't pay more than £35.
I took the ECU and chip to a local electronics company who charged me £10 to install the probinator chip.
So getting a probinator chip will only cost £45 or £80 if an ECU is needed.
P.S. Don't bother running stock K8 ECU, its utter shite compared to having a Probinator chip (curved neck) or KL31 (straight neck)

really i had a kl31 ecu in my green car with millenia curve neck intake and that ran like a champ and the vris all seemed to be in the right place. ?
