It looks like an after market alarm of some sort. probably the red wire was its power feed.

Looks like a 1.8 K8 to me!

so knowing its a K8 where is the best place to get stainless maini's from as i assum the 2.5 ones won't fit

The most popular stainless manifolds for these are MX6 ones, they are slightly longer so the catalyst has to be removed and a small straight through pipe made. But they fit the head just fine.
Ebay used to be littered with them not sure if they are on there now.
