DJMARCOPOLO'S - The GREEN RIVET

A broken cam ??
That just looks like poor installment
-
Not un common. Marco had one snap in his ze ( I think ) but didn't cause any damage.
I'd settle for either the kl36 or 31 cams personally. Pros and cons to both.
So your new engine is ok but old is dead ?. Just so I'm reading right.
I know what you mean with the mx3. Saw an Internet add for the new civic 278bhp with a 2.0 turbo. Seems as tho all 1.6 turbos have atleast 200bhp now and were messing about with a 2.5 that just makes 200. !.

It is a ball ache but thank god marco has come to the rescue again with the exact cam shaft sat in his shed so it due to be delivered monday and can finally be finished
Took the cams out the old engine and they are pretty scored so it looks like the old engine definately had oil pump failure, the sump was full of white metal suggesting the end shells have all disintegrated and the scoring on the cams show both ends of engine sufferred
I think the old engine is past saving so ill be breaking it up which is a shame as someone else could have done it up as a project. Lori has a lot of parts missing for his ZE so he will get what he needs to complete and I guess the rest maybe scrapped or sell the heads as a project for someone
Saturday is a big day as its all going back together except cambelt and rear cams but everything else will be finished ready to fit the cam monday and then hopefully engine back in on the 29th september and back on the road
Anyway another update as of today
found ferrari pistons in southampton sell thrust bearings seperately so managed to get one of those for £20
Fitted a 15 row mocal oil cooler behind the bumper in front of the radiator
Found just cutting the bracket back for the aircon rad and bolting it to the cross member support and the rad bracket and it fits perfectly behind the grill on the MS bumper
All brand new fittings purchased for it along with nice stainless braided hoses to be fitted when the engine goes back in
-
lots done today, just finished everything we can do until the replacement cam comes in on monday
Big thanks marco and just pure luck the one that snapped is the one he has left in his garage :)today, fitted sump and pick up with new gasket for oil pick up, headers are on, tensioners are fitted, gearbox, clutch, new crank oil seal and new clutch bearings all in today.
just waiting on the cam then its fit that rockers and then time it up and covers on ready to go back in on 28th september :bigok:
had to use the sump from the old engine as the new one has been damaged and bodged with tape and beaten with a hammer to remove a massive dent, so to show the damage to the bottom end here is just some of the stuff that came out in the parts cleaner, this thick sediment was in the bottom of the sump left over from the oil removal :o
Its mainly white metal so the massive knock when its running must be the big ends judging by the damage
-
Impressive lump man ;)
-
the cam shaft arrived monday (thanks Marco) :bigok:
brand new set of bosch super 4 plugs gone in, bottle of fully synthetic oil arrived at weekend and the final coats of paint on the rocker have gone on
Just secured a garage about 100 yards down the road for her for the winter now so she will be nice and dry this winter
More car porn arrived today - new set of 8mm leads and my dildo gear stick
-
busy evening today - engine now all timed up with covers on and she is all ready to go
Just a pic of the rockers before I started fitting everythingNOT LONG TIL SHE IS BACK ON THE ROAD :bigok: :bigok: :bigok:
Then she is all ready to go in her garage for the winter as I got the key yesterday :D
-
Engine finished - fitting is now september 28th
-
Nice one, is car going into storage all winter, or you planning some runs/meets? Bound to be some nice sunny days still left this year!
-
Any updates DJ?

Hi all, back again after our short online holiday lol
engine is back in and running but will be coming out again very soon
She runs like a dream and the lightened flywheel is just amazing but we have a major problem :xThe crank shaft oil seal I replaced seems to have blown out and its just chucking oil out the bell housing in a serious way, theres also signs of blue smoke and definately on start up so its possible the rings have gone and its back pressuring the engine a little causing the seal to come out
So engine out again very soon, going to fit hopefully a new set of rings right through and redo the whole bottom end to make sure :(
This winter it will be finished and then ive been discussion with the wife as its not a daily anymore the possbility of gutting the interior, then roll cage and buckets or custom fit an RX8 interior in there as it appears possible and they are very cheap to buy
Anyway ca is parked in its garage now covered in blankets so just waiting for a weekend me & my dad can get into it and whip this out againheres some progress pics to show too
Also a video of first run i took can see the little amounts of white smoke i mentioned and the ticking has now gone and she purrs perfectly

That's a shame mate, you've made a nice job of everything, still you've got all winter to sort it out!!
So there is a lot of difference between k8 and fidenza flywheel? Keep up the good work DJ
-
A couple of things to try before you pull it out…
- Take out the dipstick and see if you get compression coming out.
- Do the same with the oil filler cap
- Do same with a breather pipe
- Do a compression test mark down results
- Drop a very small bit of oil down each sparkplug hole in turn and re-do compression test (the oil seals any gaps in the rings, so a big difference can indicate worn rings / cylinders)
- If you find a difference you can confirm by doing a cylinder leakage test, if it shows a leak state then you just listen at the dipstick, filler cap and breather pipe in turn to confirm its the rings.
Is it only burning oil from cold startup? Could be stem seals?
A bit strange to blow out a new seal though, was it a good fit? Does the MX-3 have a crank breather pipe? (its been a while since i've worked on one LOL) Check to see its not collapsed, gone soft, got blocked etc and is working properly.
What is your oil pressure doing? Have you put new headgasket on? Did you use a KLZE one as the holes are not the same on K8 or KLDE ones, maybe a blocked off oil hole? Scrap that you would have more noticable problems, it probably would not run LOL just spamming ideas out of my brain as i'm in a real hurry.
Hope you get it sorted.
-
Juts a quick note, hone the cylinders when your putting in new rings, make sure the gaps are opposite each other.
-
Gulfy - fidanza makes a very noticeable difference on pull away :)
daryl
Stem seals were all done with the head refurbish and if you notice on revving video it puffs a little on deceleration even when warmthe seal on the shaft was a tight fit, we took a week to find it as no-one stocks it but we found a company locally that could order it and matched the part numbers up. just wonder if we need to use some of that gasket glue on that part on the block side of the gasket
will try to do a proper compression test this weekend as a buddy has a compression tester kit and also the head set was a DE kit but all the channels etc seem to be a perfect marriage and our local place we get all out parts from didnt have any listings for ZE
