DJMARCOPOLO'S - The GREEN RIVET
-
Great news as the fidanza flywheel from marco arrived today so that will be going in when the engine goes back together, heads have been started with all new valve stem oil seals and new springs.
While the engine is out its having a full bay respray and all the rust treated with jenolite, spent the evening grinding out all the rust and treating itnext stop is some primer when it arrives
Also wrapped the exhaust headers with titanium heat wrap too
-
Started spraying engine bay, one side at a time
the whole lot will be matt black so the gloss on the engine really pops outGot a list of new work to be done as i find more and more,
steering rack gators
clutch master cylinder leak
track rod end
-
Spendin a couple of hours a night on the engine bay, been removing all the little brackets and pipes and painting them up, cleaning all the plastic hoses with clutch & brake cleaner and then polishing with back to black.
replacing all the bolts with stainless steel and all bolts on show with stainless counter sunks with green screw cups to clean the bay up more
Tomorrow the brake & clutch system comes out for the servo's to be painted and then I can start on engine mounts, passenger side inner wing and then finally the wiper tray & motor.
ext week ill be repainting all the bolt on's like starter motor etc and possible new casings for the loom to be hidden inheres some pics of progress this week

Flash Dash is a silicone based interior cleaner and it really makes any rubber hoses or plastic parts shine very nicely.
I've always used it in engine bay dress up.
You can control how shiney you want it by how much you buff it off after application.
Its great stuff.
But you have to get the one in the light blue can !!! I've tried all the others and they do not work!!
This one:
Also its best to clean any marks off first before using the spray or they just get trapped underneath, it will clean dirt off but if there are any serious marks I always get rid of them first.
-
Thanks, I will purchase some
:bigok:
-
Here are some engine bay pics, the whole engine bay was cleaned with flash dash, even the paintwork and all plastics.
DO NOT GET IT ON ANY SURFACE YOU PLAN TO PAINT!!
Or you will have to clean it off with spirits etc.
Its great for doing the back of the headlights, fan / radiator plastics etc I literally do the whole engine bay with it. I t will work on anything that is a gloss finish, avoid getting on matt / satin finishes.
Or at least do a tester on a spot that can't be seen.
-
cool thanks for the heads up
-
Cheapest place I found it was my local ASDA (under £4)
But they frequently do a 2 for 1 offer on it so I buy it then.
-
heads are back on and torqued up, new valve stem seals and uprated springs fitted, next on is cams on the heads
brand new water pump fitted and new idlers
engine painted
bay finished painting
replacing all bolts with stainless
all new stainless hose clips throughout
all new silicone pipes being ftted
external oil cooler on order
recovered the loom in silver coloured tubingFound the flywheel bearing had seized on new engine and burnt out, causing massive heat to the clutch with lots of discolouration and melted the grease in the thrust bearing causing that to collapse as well as the crank shaft oil seal to go hard and crack
Ordered all of those parts today after a lot of searching as they arent that easy to buy individually but found them and waiting for them to come inFound the sump has been battered in the past and someone has eaten it out with a hammer and then covered the exterior in heat reflective tape, just sourcing a new oil pan for that too
Also put on new track rod ends and new steering rack gators
Lots more to do but its getting there now and starting to go back together
-
One day bud, I'll drive mine down for help with the same :) - Make a weekend of it. Beer on me :P
Bloody nice work thou!
-
I'd add a high temp clearcoat over that engine if you have not already.
It makes it much easier to keep clean.
-
VHT clearcoat is applied already and looks great now
Yesterday stripped all parts off the gearbox and painted that and painted all other mounts & brackets in matt black all the way down to the dipstick, all pulleys now in matt black too
Started on the top of the engine with front rocker & inlet is in vauxhall black pearl paint, want the engine glossy with matt surrounds to make it pop and keeping it very simple with black and silver throughout engine bay and its really starting to look good
Spent last night with my can of flash dash polishing brake lines and loom plugs in the bay
still a bit to do as Im painting all the engine accessories like oil filter mounting, power steering pump, alternator, starter etc
I have a brand new battery fitted so might get that vinyl wrapped and looking for a better battery mounting to make it look a bit neater
-
I have to say this only because I regretted doing it myself, but I painted my rockers black and always wished i'd gone with something that stood out more.
-
just having a simple theme under the bonnet
-
Loving the work and dedication! 8) Keep it up :)

sometimes I really wonder why I bother with this car
Hopefully the other one is alright in the old engine, just looking for another pair of kl31 cams to repair the old engine with now so someone else can have a klze as I dont want to weigh it in, turns out the big ends have all exploded in the old engine
-
A broken cam ??
That just looks like poor installment
-
Not un common. Marco had one snap in his ze ( I think ) but didn't cause any damage.
I'd settle for either the kl36 or 31 cams personally. Pros and cons to both.
So your new engine is ok but old is dead ?. Just so I'm reading right.
I know what you mean with the mx3. Saw an Internet add for the new civic 278bhp with a 2.0 turbo. Seems as tho all 1.6 turbos have atleast 200bhp now and were messing about with a 2.5 that just makes 200. !.

It is a ball ache but thank god marco has come to the rescue again with the exact cam shaft sat in his shed so it due to be delivered monday and can finally be finished
Took the cams out the old engine and they are pretty scored so it looks like the old engine definately had oil pump failure, the sump was full of white metal suggesting the end shells have all disintegrated and the scoring on the cams show both ends of engine sufferred
I think the old engine is past saving so ill be breaking it up which is a shame as someone else could have done it up as a project. Lori has a lot of parts missing for his ZE so he will get what he needs to complete and I guess the rest maybe scrapped or sell the heads as a project for someone
Saturday is a big day as its all going back together except cambelt and rear cams but everything else will be finished ready to fit the cam monday and then hopefully engine back in on the 29th september and back on the road
Anyway another update as of today
found ferrari pistons in southampton sell thrust bearings seperately so managed to get one of those for £20
Fitted a 15 row mocal oil cooler behind the bumper in front of the radiator
Found just cutting the bracket back for the aircon rad and bolting it to the cross member support and the rad bracket and it fits perfectly behind the grill on the MS bumper
All brand new fittings purchased for it along with nice stainless braided hoses to be fitted when the engine goes back in
-
lots done today, just finished everything we can do until the replacement cam comes in on monday
Big thanks marco and just pure luck the one that snapped is the one he has left in his garage :)today, fitted sump and pick up with new gasket for oil pick up, headers are on, tensioners are fitted, gearbox, clutch, new crank oil seal and new clutch bearings all in today.
just waiting on the cam then its fit that rockers and then time it up and covers on ready to go back in on 28th september :bigok:
had to use the sump from the old engine as the new one has been damaged and bodged with tape and beaten with a hammer to remove a massive dent, so to show the damage to the bottom end here is just some of the stuff that came out in the parts cleaner, this thick sediment was in the bottom of the sump left over from the oil removal :o
Its mainly white metal so the massive knock when its running must be the big ends judging by the damage
