Distributor?
-
Hi there - I have a J-reg MX-3 that belonged to my Dad. He had it from new and it is in good condition but recently it started stalling when the revs went above tick over speed. The local garage seems to think it is the coil or distributor but is having trouble getting hold of a replacement. My questions are does this sound like a distributor problem, and is it possible to get hold of a new/used distributor at a reasonable price, and if so, where? Thanks, Sean

1.6 or 1.8 ?

Sorry, should have said 1.8 V6.

I think ash is braking a v6 atm. Chuck him a PM

sounds like the common induction pipe rubber cracked, Try wrapping it in duct tape to see if it improves for a free fix if it is the problem then replace the pipe, duct tape is a temp fix

Good point Dave. I should really sleep at night lol.

Does sound like a split induction pipe. if it is the distributer there are 2 types and a used one should cost about £40 and dont worry about taking iy back to the garage just need a socket set as its only 2 bolts holding it in and very easy to swap over

Thanks for the suggestions. Apparently there is no spark at all - not sure if that would be the case with a split induction pipe (you can tell I am not very mechanically minded!). If I need a distributor where's the best place to get one, and which type would I need for a 92 1.8?

eBay unless someone on here has a spare.
There's a T number stamped on it your need to match up with that, think there are only 2 types.

I'm not sure how it can stall at 'above tickover' and have no spark at all, as I take it the engine starts and runs…?
could be so many things (TPS, Coil, Distributor, Rotor arm, HT leads, sensors, ECU...)
Best thing to do is take off the ditributor cap and check the condition of the 'terminals?' (metal and carbon bits) in the cap and on the rotor arm. If you are not sure post pictures...
Failing this you could test the coil or swap the coil to check this...
first thing is to check the intake hose, as a leak here is common and makes the engine run badly...
Good luck!

It could be just dizzy cap and rotor arm, they are very easy to fit with a screwdriver so here is some links
It maybe the little rectifier has gone so its worth swapping the whole unit over if practical
The 1991 - 93 distributer has just a small bump on the cap, after that they have like a switch on them for 94-98 models thats how to visually tell the difference
1991 - 1993
1994 - 1998
Heres what you will need
complete used dizzy for 1991-93

Thanks for the info. It was starting, ticking over fine then stalled when reved - the AA towed me 20 miles with it ticking over perfectly. The garage says that now it won't even start. They think coil or distributor. I'll see if I can find one online.

djmarcopolo - wow, you've actually given me a link to a distributor for sale! Thanks so much for your help.

well the later type engines with the differnt dissy if the crank shaft sensor is bust then it wont start or spark at all but the earlier type still runs just rubbish and all spluttery, i know of someone who replaced the dissy and no change to how it was, but saying that see if someone is local to try there dissy
