Big brake kits?
-
So… what's available?
Who has done what to give themselves that little extra stopping power?

K sport big brake kit.
search precision brakes in U.S.
see marcos project page, also think he might have done a how to also.
see my project page. Custom built willwoods.
not upgraded OEM discs and pads so i couldnt confirm what this option is like. I was cooking discs with Ze engine so went straight to big brake conversion.

I will be investigating at the weekend. I have the specs of a number of 'larger discs' that fit perfectly, fit okay with a hubcentric collar, and don't fit but will with the help of a couple of machining ops. These range from 275 up to 305mm.
We also have a couple of different calipers to try. If the combos we try clear the standard wheel, I hope to make some specs (or possibly the brackets/collars themselves) available to all.

Things went well.
I have a number of schemes on the drawing board ranging from 275 up to 320mm brakes, using a variety of Mazda and aftermarket parts.
Four-stud options go from an easy 275mm off-the-shelf nut-and-bolt single-pot how-to option to a possible 294mm disc for the Xedos 9 Twin-pot which requires some machining of the MX-3 knuckle and a sturdy bolt-on bracket.
Five stud options are 296 and 320mm with big alloy calipers.
It's all looking a bit tight on clearance for the five-stud, I'll have to be fairly lucky with (big - 16x8) wheel choice - but when I have parts, I'll let you know. :D
-
Good to hear more options coming through. I'm very happy with xedos 9 callipers but would love a bigger disc to match.

Surely if there is a list of rims from other cars as long as your arm which wheels fit then also the brake discs will fit? Its only a case of measuring up the discs to find discs that will fit and calipers with the same bolt pattern
-
i really wish willwood or k-sport made brakes for 15" rims :(
-
Just spend the money on decent pads like Mintex 1144's then your not increasing weight in the wrong area ;)
-
My kit is lighter than oem.

What is your opinion on the redrilling of a 5 lug disk to our 4x100 lug pattern ?
I'm trying to find 4x100 disks but so far only Mini cooper (S)
-
Dont see any issue with that as long as you use a pillar drill and the old disc as a template or take it to machine shop and have them do it?
Centre bore may require a spigot locating ring?
-
at that point, you might as well just do the 5 lug swap. then you could even do the mazda6 break upgrade. the 03-05 mazda6 set up clears 15's, and bolts on to the 5 lug hubs.

I thought I'd revive this thread.....
I'm presently swapping out the 4 stud hubs for 5 stud and I'm going to have a play with getting some audi s3 320mm discs and rx8 calipers to fit the front of the mx3. I'll post some pics up here when I get the calipers.
