Yes you can cut too much, theres only so much paint on there to cut back.

Washed it first with shampoo and hot water.Ran over it lightly with autoglym tar remover, washed it again. then used t-cut and finished with turtle wax colour magic. but remember reading t-cut is a bit aggresive so will read link youdirtyfox put up and see if theres any nicer options..

Autoglym paint cleaner is a little nicer…
also you may want to have a go at clay barring it to remove all contaminates,.. theres different grades in the clay...superfine is great used with demon shine polish as a lube..

Ebay fella loads on there make sure you get the extra fine one though…and use loads of lube like said demon shine polish is perfect as a lube..

OMG, just got in from claybarring car, that stuff is fantastic.
Bit of polish and gloss after and she's gleaming :D :D
