Engine swaps?

  • yeah that is right. mine has 3 from what i could see but it was dark. if there is 4 are they in the same block of connectors? i just wanna make sure i got it right before i start jumping around the room lol.

  • @7c9a3ff6b6=mx3gulf:

I thought the easiest way to find out if obd1 or obd2 was to look at the number of plug connectors to the ECU 3 = obd1 - 4 = obd2, is that not right??

Yeh thats what i thought too, pretty much the only certified way.

  • i just checked again and it has 3 yellow connectors. a short one in the middle and two slightly longer ones either side. is this orrect? thanks for the help guys

I will check on mine tomorrow and let you know

  • thanks. all help is appreciated. if it is i will try and source an de or ze engine. the de is supposed to be slightly harder to fit due to the headers being slightly different and im all about how easy it can be lol. if i get a ze i am guessing i will need headers and the whole exhaust system from an mx6 or 626. i am also guessing i will have to mount new brackets on the exhaust and will have to shave a few inches off somewhere along the line to stop it pertruding too much.

I have a complete untouched klze mx6 with all the parts you need, inc folding mirrors for sale

  • Ze and DE are same fitment and both will have same level of trickyness to fit. With the ze there is two intake manifolds, straight neck and curved neck, the straight neck version will mean relocating the battery, trying to get hold of a curved neck ze is very difficult as most are straight necked.
There will prob be a difference in price between a DE and ZE, the DE is much cheaper to get hold of for both engine and ecu, although finding a good mileage DE engine will be harder, as most Ze engines are shipped in from Japan where most low mileage engines are found. you can just bolt the 1.8 exhaust system to both the DE and ZE, this is what i did until i had the cash to get the exhaust upgraded. The stainless steel manifolds release alot of power on both ZE and DE. The rest of the system after that will give you id say 5bhp. De cat if poss and perhaps more. The stainless steel manifolds will need modifying to fit as they are made to fit mx6 and probe where these cars are longer so exhaust section by cat needs trimming/alteration. Make sure your engine mounts are in good nick too, search awr mounts for a good engine mount upgrade. You can use 1.8 gearbox no problem but you will need to upgrade cluch in either de or ze choice, there is only minor changes between the 1.8 and 2.5 engine and it really is almost a like for like swap. Just make sure your car is equipt for the extra bhp, brakes, suspension, tyres etc etc will all make a difference otherwise its going to be useless at getting power down effectively. Dont also think that it is going to be cheap, id buget atleast 1k if you know a cheap mechanic/helper. More if your fully relying on a mechanic. But the end result if you do pull it off is amazing. The ze engine from experience feels like it should have been in the mx-3 from day 1. I dont know about the De. Mx3 gulf has had both de and ze engines and he can advise you on best result engine, but im sure he will say ze too :D

    happy modding!!

  • wow thanks all of that was really helpful. i do have a mechanic friend who will be doing most of the bolting up after i have got the 1.8 out. i will do as much as i can myself but just need him to assist me really to mke sure i do it right. how much do u want for the ze engine mate? i have gotta do some saving up lol. does it include ecu? thanks again guys. really appreciate it

  • guys who have ze engines for sale are ukadmin and kami, but admin is away on family business so wont be able to answer you for a while. If i was in your shoes i would buy djmarcos klze mx6. Take the engine and gearbox out as one complete unit. There would also be no need for clutch change, then take out djmarcos ecu and plug it into yours then i would take your 1.8 engine and gearbox and dump that straight into the mx6, plug in the ecu and flog the car on the cheap, as a 1.8 v6 lump is prob only worth £50. So you could prob sell the mx6 with 1.8 engine for couple of hundred, and re-coup some costs, or agree for your mechanic friend to have mx6 and 1.8 engine/gearbox for his labour efforts!!. I have seen a mx6 with a 1.8 engine in before and very little notice the difference lol.

  • oh if you do swap the 2.5 engine and 2.5 gearbox, the 1.8 flywheel is lighter so you would want to keep that to bolt to the 2.5 box, your get a better response with a lighter flywheel. You can get ulta light fidenza flywheels but are no way cheap!. Although if you have no intention of doing clutch change i would keep engine and box bolted and just drop it straight into mx-3.

oh your also notice that the ze lump doesnt use a egr system, so your have no use for mx-3 1.8 egr system.

  • is marcos mx6 the silver one on ebay? i had a look at it earlier if it is. low milage engine. you guys are seem to know everything about these swaps lol. will the mx3 headers fit on a ze until i get the real deal? i know they are pretty restricted and wouldnt want to harm the 2.5 if i can help it. you must realise i am a complete noob at this. the only engine i have changed before is a 1.1 saxo engine which i could pick up myself. this is a totally different animal haha

  • It will restrict it and cause it to run rich, although it won't harm it. I had 146bhp with ze bolted to a complete stock 1.8 exhaust system and then after I done manifolds, sports cat, and exhaust went up to 188 bhp. Still got some tuning to do on mine. Mx3 gulf has 190 something on hes. It's not a bad idea if your trying to cut costs and do a gradual project build.

Oh also also alot easier to do cam belt and water pump while engine out so I'd consider that too.

  • thats even better news for me as i am working to a budget. and besides 146hp is more than 130hp so it will make a slight difference with alot more torque until i get a stainless system fitted. i will try and save up for a full system from powerflow with sports cat etc but thats gonna be pretty expensive. as long as i know i can get the engine in and running the rest can wait for a few months. gotta save for an engine or mx6 yet. i would prbably do as you said which was to give my mate the 1.8 mx6 for payment. happy days

  • Yep. Metal prices are set for an all time high next year along with vat increase not good !.

  • might have to go out robbin old ladies lol. yeah its going up to 20% aint it? the best metal to invest in is gold by far! my partner and i used to buy and sell. our last batch went for over ten pounds per gram!! that was just your cheapy 9ct stuff as well. wish we kept it really cos will be worth alot more soon

  • sorry i forgot its a car forum haha

  • Just a quick word, DJ's MX6 is a auto so you will need to use gearbox from your car, I think the ECU is different on manuals & autos too, but not 100& certain

  • well m gearbox is fine. still feels tight. i will look into the ecu business. its ok if it is different as i dont exactly have pocketfulls of cash atm. i know i can pick up a probe round here for cheap so not really too bothered. i should get a job before i even think about big mods like this but i cant help myself :-)

  • If the ecus are different, then the vris points won't be the same, so they won't be compatible with each other, when I done KLDE swap, power gain was good  if you can find a cheap probe thats a runner so you can see engine running then go for it, as you will have everything you need on car too, KLZE is more power but you will be looking at least double the price against a KLDE, + I have heard some KLZE's don't put out the alleged 192bhp, mines putting out 196bhp/180lb torque with a decat, stainless headers, lighter mx3 flywheel and uprated HT leads

    have a looky

  • just done a bit of research and it looks like an auto ecu will not work on a 5 speed manual gearbox due to the ecu having to know which gear it is in so it can change gears at certain rpm depnding on how hard it is driven. would a KLDE manual ecu work with a ZE engine.
