MX-3 Engine Swap Chart

  • All the info in the charts is for OBDI cars

You can also run a Probinator chipped K8 ECU with the KLZE Engine

And KLZE is OK for Turbo conversions with Low Boost

Also Throttle Bodies work well with the KLZE

  • This should be stickied great info!

going by the stats of the ZE-DE i take it its only really the head (inc cams n shit) that makes the differnce in power aswell as pistons?

  • Great Info!!! Should be in a sticky!

PS: Where to you get teh BPD-T? I wants one lol

  • Impossible to find as is but…
You can buy a BP-T from the 323 then upgrade the turbo to BPD-T spec.
You can even get the turbos of Ebay (long time since I looked though).

  • BP
The 1,839 cc (1.839 L; 112.2 cu in) BP is a dual-overhead variant of the B8. It was first found in the 1989 Mazda Familia and American-market 1990 Mazda Protege LX. This engine was dubbed BP-ZE and featured a forged crankshaft, piston oil squirters, a structural aluminum oil pan with cooling fins, and Variable Inertia Charging System (VICS). This particular variant can be found in the following vehicles:

1989-1994 Mazda Familia GT (European & Australian Market)
1989-1994 Ford Laser TX3 (Australian Market)
1990-1994 Mazda Protege LX (with VICS)
1995-1998 Mazda Protege ES (Australian Market BA)
    1990 Mazda Infini
1990-1991 and 1993 Mazda Protege GT (Canadian Market)
    1990-1993 Mazda 323 (European Market)
1991-1996 Ford Escort GT and LX-E
    1991-1996 Mercury Tracer LTS
1995-1997 Kia Sephia RS, LS, GS
    1994-1998 Mazda Familia (Japanese Market)
1994-1997 Mazda MX-5/Miata (did not have VICS until 1999)
There is also a non-performance version that is most easily recognized by its black stamped-steel oil pan. It also features a cast crankshaft, no oil squirters, a plastic oil pickup tube and less aggressive camshafts. It is found in the 1995-1998 Mazda Protege ES.

    BPT

Mazda BPT - Turbocharged 1.8LThe BPT is a turbocharged and intercooled variant of the BP. It produced 179 hp (134 kW) and 174 ft·lbf (237 N·m) of torque. It featured a vj20 turbocharger, sidemount intercooler, 330cc blacktop injectors (high impedance). The standard BPT ecu had a boost cut at 11psi. The BPT versions of the Familia and Laser were only available in 4WD models, and featured an open front differential and an viscous LSD rear differential. This engine is rumoured to have been installed in some Mazda MX-5 Miata models. Applications:

    1989-1994 Mazda Familia GT-X (Japan)
1989-1994 Ford Laser TX3 turbo (Australia)
    Ford Laser GT-X

    BPD

The mazda BPD engine (also commonly referred to as a BP2) was a revamp of the original BP engine(BP1). It featured a larger crank nose, larger piston oil squirters, a main bearing support plate, better flowing inlet and exhaust ports. This was also the base engine for the Mazda Familia GT-R and GT-Ae. It is commonly known as the 'big turbo' variant as it utilised a much larger IHI RHF6CB watercooled turbocharger(vj23). The BPD was used as the basis for the engine, with changes such as sodium filled exhaust valves, larger (and front mounted) intercooler, larger (440cc) low impedance fuel injectors and stronger engine internals helping to up the performance of the engine to produce 209 hp (156 kW) and 184 ft·lbf (255 N·m).The VICS system of the N/A BP has been removed, as well as the boost cut from the ecu. This engine was designed to power Mazda to a world rally championship win, and was thus used in the limited production Mazda Familia GT-R (2200 built) and GTAe (300 built).

    The 1989/1990 BG Familia

was available in hatchback or sedan formats, with front- or four-wheel drive and a 1.3 L, 1.5 L, 1.6 L, or 1.8 L gas or 1.7 L diesel engine. In North America, the 323 sedan became the Protegé, while the 323 hatchback remained the same name. The Protegé was in competition with the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic, while the 323 hatchback competed with the Geo Metro and Toyota Tercel.

The GT model, only sold in Canada in 1990, 1991 and 1993, came with the 1.8 BP engine also found on the 1991-94 Ford Escort GT. It borrowed the interior from the GTX model, and had all factory options including a rear trunk spoiler not available in America. Ford also had a twin called the Laser in the Asian Pacific for this generation, but sold it in the United States as the Escort. It no longer resembled the Mazda versions externally.

In Japan, the 5-door hatchback, featuring a distinct front end with pop-up headlights, was sold as the Mazda Familia Astina and (Japanese: Eunos 100). Trim lines in Japan included Clair, Interplay, Supreme, "Pepper", and GT-X. In Europe, this model variant was badged as Mazda 323F

The 323 version was brought out as an upgrade version of the familia with the SOHC 16v 1.6 producing 115 hp out of the factory.

The car donated its mechanicals/Unibody to the 1991-1996 Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer and 1994-1997 Kia Sephia in North America, as well as the Ford Laser in Australia.

In America, the LX version of the Protegé became known for its interior room (for its class), sporty handling, and high revving 125 horsepower (93 kW) engine.[citation needed] LX models also had 14-inch (360 mm) wheels, front and rear disc brakes, and dual stabilizer bars.

In New Zealand, all BG models that were manufactured in New Zealand came with glass headlights instead of plastic, disc brakes all round (as opposed to drums on the rear), and a 240kph speedo. for 1994 model year it was the lasted Protege as the Subcompact Car of the 7th generation.

Production of the 1994 model ended on May 24, 1994.

    Familia GTR and GT-Ae

The JDM GTX model featured four wheel drive, viscous limited slip differentials and a turbocharged 1.8 L BP engine. In the U.S. the Protegé came with a 1.8 L non-turbo, with the 4WD. The rare JDM GT-R rally version was added in 1992, featuring a number of performance enhancements over the GTX model: a stronger gearbox (G5M-R), sodium filled exhaust valve stems, an aggressive front bumper, grill and bonnet vents, updated rear bumper, wheel flares, stiffer suspension and anti-roll bars with thicker cross members, stronger engine internals, larger IHI RHF6CB VJ-23 roller-bearing turbo, and homologated five stud wheel hubs with larger brakes. The interior was all leather and suede and had the option of replacing the cupholder with a 3 gauge cluster. The GTR has these engine and management benefits over a stock GTX: stronger connecting rods and pistons, bigger oil squirters, larger nose crank, bigger oil cooler, sodium filled valves, inlet manifold is baffled, bigger injectors (from 330cc(black) to 440cc(orange)), removed boost cut, front mounted intercooler, VJ23 turbo ball bearing watercooled turbocharger.

The GTR has 156 kW while the GTX has 135 kW. 300 special version GT-R's were produced known as GT-Ae's. These shared the power output of the GT-R, but were 30 kg's lighter, fitted with closer ratio gearboxes, and featured a larger top spoiler with a gap between the hatch and the spoiler to direct air to the new lower spoiler. To counter the weight of the extra spoiler and larger top spoiler, options for ABS, A/C, power mirrors, power windows, power locks, sunroof were removed. Instead of using the GTR's leather interior, Mazda opted for the lighter cloth interior of its younger brother, the GTX.

Then you use the KIA SEPHIA gearbox!!! as its the strongest FWD one that fits.
Thats how I understand it anyway.

The engine and all bits you need though costs way more than a KLZE swap. The BPT engine alone with wiring and all turbo and exhaust parts is like £1500!! for a good one.
