Head Light wiring
-
Hi folks!
Not a problem as such just a bit of a gripe on my part really!
This is realting to the way the headlights function on my MX. And was after any advice as how to change the wiring set up to stop it happening.
This is whats happening, as I said it's not a problem as my car is supposed to do this but I don't want it to!!
Basicly when you turn you lights on to side lights, the little lights on the bumper come on. If you turn the ignition on then the main headlights come on, but very dim. If you then turn to dip lights they function as normal. It's the bit when you select side lights and turn the ignition on and the main lights come on dim I want to stop happeneing. My last MX didn't do this, if you selected side lights, that was all you got, the little lights in the bumper came on and that was it. My current one though as soon as the ignition is switched on the main lights come on dim as well as the bumper lights. I know this is supposed to happen as I've seen a few MX's like this, but I don't want it like this, I would much prefer it to be like my old one, if I select side lights that's all I want!
Does anyone know the wiring set up of the lights that causes this or if it's juat a relay that needs changing?
My old MX had headlight height adjustment too and my current one doesn't. Also my old MX was obdII and my current one it obdI if that's of any help.
Hope you all get what I talking about as I seem to be rambling trying to get my point accross!!
Cheers for any advice guys.

well I would guess it has DRL lights (daytime running lamps)… I believe the box that controls them is right near the windshield under the hood (not sure if it's on the right or left side)... as far as headlight adjustment was a it a switch on the interior that had "0,1,2,3" on it?

Or dim-dip as it is known over here.
I like it in principle as it makes you more noticeable but, as I am seriously considering an HID kit soon I am wondering if I would need to disconnect this function.

That's exactly what I was thinking about too, if you HID will it work properly as I doubt you'll be able to dim-dip HID lamps. Might cause some damage to the balast trying to fire them like that.
I don't like the look of it at the moment and was also considering HID in the near future.

Thats the one Mooneggs, the roller switch with 0,1,2,3 on it. Haven't got that on my current MX, I've got a dash light dimmer in it's place. My old MX had it though but no dash light dimmer, not that it ever gets used!
I'll have a look for the control box. There are a few relays under the hood on the right hand side of the car, I'll have a tinker and see what's going on.
I'll post up and thing I might find.

ooo i wanna do that to so its just the bumped sides rather than dip dim

i'll add to this that with the dip dim any hid's are useless you cannot use full beam or it will stick I.e you have your normal dim lights whislt driving at night and when you select your hi beams you cannot drop back to your low beams unless you switch off the engine.

yeah that headlight leveling option wasn't available on every mx-3 - kind of a special feature :D

The dim-dip has to have a resistance in line to drop the voltage to the dipped bulb filament.
I assumed that the connector at the rear of the bulb would have an extra wire but it doesn't. :x
So, I think there must be a relay somewhere which, when you switch to sidelights with ignition on, puts a low voltage supply to the dipped side of the bulb.
Trouble is where the hell is all this stuff???I have now bought a bi-xenon kit which seems fairly easy to fit but I need to remove this damned dim-dip circuit.
Anybody any clues?

Been to local auto electric people today and I really need a circuit and schematic for this.
I have a USA workshop manual that I downloaded some time ago but dim-dip wasn't fitted over there.
Anyone got a circuit and schematic for UK cars?
