Cambelt change images
-
Hi all,
Does anyone have the instructions for changing the cambelt on a 1.8 V6? I know there are instructions on the US mx-3 site but the images don't work.
Anyone got it in a pdf, or word document?
My belt snapped and a garage insists it is £2000 to fix (even though I know it is a non-interference engine and will just need a new belt!) so I am doing it myself.

lol at 2k. Check your messages dude
-
i got the whole lot changed for 300 quid, that was with towing away, and new spark plugs!!!
-
£320 fitted with new rollers and water pump!
-
its not hard theres quite alot of room down the side but you do have to take quite alot of to get to it but apart from the basic tools you will need a trolly jack and an axle stand to put under the sill coz you will have to take the engine mount off the only problem i can see for you would be getting the bottom pully off so try that first
if you need to know anything else just ask

Right…well its almost ben ayear since this belt snapped and I finally have time to sort it. Started this morning and it feels like I have made no progress at all! the workshop manual pictures are crap and I am finding it hard working out what is what.
Bottom pulley...do you mean the one on the alternaterbelt to the left of the tensioner? if you do then you are right. I have taken the nut and washer off the middle but cannot for the life of me get the pulley off!!
Am I right in thinking the drive belt and the alternator belt needs to com off before I can get to the cam belt..?
I found instructions months ago but can't seem to find them again, and working from the workshop manual is hard work!!

The bottom pulley is the large pulley at the base i think its like a 21mm bolt that holds it on.
Onece you have the bolt out you need to give the pullley a bit of a tap with a rubber mallet or block of wood. It is keyed so you cant put it back on wrong, it will be tight. You need remove both of ya beltst out of the way..
Good luck..

oops…bad memory, I forgot I posted this at the weekend and started a new thread on the belts...sorry all!
The 2 belts are off...and need replacing. one seems to drive the water pump and the other the alternator... am I right?

Got a problem. I have the belts off, but need to remove the crank pulley. I know its only one nut (21mm) but how do I get it off? It spins the whole crank pulley when I try to turn the nut. I have the car up high, in gear, break on…..but it still spins.
?

I use an air gun to shock em off…
-
or do it the ghetto way as in my UDP guide in the HOW TO section:
Wedge breaker bar to ground with socket on bolt, crank car, stop car, done. I accept no responsibility if it blows your crank bearings to bits or anything else!(I've done it twice no problem though)

that's what I had to do… crank pulley can be stuck real bad if you've never removed it!
-
hmm theres meant to be 350ftlbs on my air impact gun, my crank pulley laughed at it

I used the mazda workshop manual when I changed mine:
http://www.mx-3.com/manuals/showimg.php?file=/1992 Workshop Manual/B2/92_B2-106.gif
that should get you started…

**Well, we just quit after half an hour of trying to get this sodding bolt off. There has to be an "easy" way, but nothing we've tried yet has done anything but spin the crankshaft.
Expletive expletive expletive.
Anyone got any better ideas?**

put the car in gear. it will stop it from spinning so you can undo the nut. i used the:
http://www.mx-3.com/manuals/index.php?folder=/
manual, it has for the normal engine (K8 mine is) and i had no experience doing anything remotely mechanical and i was fine doing mine. just remember to do all nuts up properly and double checK everything (from my experience!)
good luck mate

**Nup. We can turn it in any gear. We're using a combination of Leska's MX-3.com guide, the 1995 workshop manual and Chilton's manual. And this **ing nut will not budge.
-
To get the engine to stop spinning take the starter motor off, then jam the flywheel that you can see in the gap with a large screwdriver or similar that will lock the engine solid then its a case of a large lever bar to take the crank pulley off, they are tight and usually done up with a windy gun.
When you put it all back make sure everything is covered in copperslip to avoid this again
-
**Damn. That means taking off the entire intake tract.
That said, I'd have to do that to swap the fuel filter, so… tomorrow's job!**

have you tried it with the foot brake on?
